I feel better now - they offered me 9000. But never answered any of my emails...

Bertrand's joke about 6000 a week [the pinyin is actually "kuai", but I know without tones he can't read it]

Mainland pinyin, Taiwanese pinyin, or one of the other numerous variants?

would be mildly amusing if he hadn't used it on another current thread.

Never claimed it to be amusing.

Inhabitants of Hong Kong and Taiwan have long looked down on the mainland as the home of their backward, backwoods, six toed cousins, without really reflecting on the reasons for their own prosperity. As China's economic growth continues,[8% p.a. at least since I first came here], their own lacklustre economies should give them reason to change that attitude.

Whatever. But to most, it takes a lot more than a few skyscrapers in a few cities to lift a country out of the Third World. Hmmm...."reflecting on the reasons for their own prosperity"; sorry, I'm too busy being prosperous. But anyway, I would merely ask if all those backward Chinese mainlanders ever reflect on their poverty. As for your 8 percent, I would simply retort that 8 percent of next to nothing is nothing. Anyway, please do not try to tell me that you actually believe figures that stem from the Chinese authorities...? You really have been there too long. Hmmm..., "lucklustre".....not quite how the WTO described the Chinese economy.

Also, it's hardly realistic to judge mainland salaries in comparison with HK which, for all its attractions, has a Western cost of living. And as for housing....!!!

Wrong again, I'm afraid. I spend less each month in HK than I did on the mainland; much less. If you knew ANYTHING about TEFL in HK you would know that NETs have their housing paid (anything up to 13,000 HK dollars A MONTH). So, sorry, but you are wrong on all points.

6000 a month for those hours is a good deal anywhere in China- for now.
