Well, I've decided that 3,100RMB a month and the bright lights of Jishou just don't cut it. I've enjoyed my first semester here, and I intend to teach another semester, but after the Spring Festival I will move on to greener (or is that pinker, as in the 100RMB note?) pastures.
So far I have Kunming Medical College asking for the usual stuff (CV...I guess that means resume...never encountered the term before I came here), my "farewell policy" (I love it! I think I'll adopt that expression), and the zinger...my current salary. What should I tell 'em?? I know my 3,100 pinkbacks a month are an embarrasement, and I want to get to a good offer. By Spring Festival, I'll have a year's experience under my belt. How high should I go to get to the salary level I want? Say, if I want 5,000 (is that pushing it?), should I tell Kumming I'm getting 4,000? Or should I play it straight and tell 'em the truth? (always a risky proposition, I know, I know! )
Also, if anyone knows about this Kunming Medical College, a PM would be greatly appreciated and karmically advisable.
Looking to promoted from Clueless Newbie to Veteran Newbie,
Roberto! |

Yes, Roberto, CV (or "curriculum vitae") is a snooty term for a resume. Probably some connection to the Metric System and as an American I say to hell with it.
Recommend a different tactic. Tell them that with your year of experience you have located a lot of jobs that pay a lot more. (Should be the truth, if it isn't..) You really LOVE their school, and you REALLY respect their program, and you want VERY much to work for them, but you also want to have a comfortable and rewarding time in China. You can find several jobs at 6000, but because they are nice people and do such good work you'll make a personal sacrifice and work for them for 5500. (YES!) If they can't do that you'll be forced to go elsewhere.
If they don't bite, sigh deeply, silently look defeated for a couple of minutes, and tell them that because you believe in their work so much you'll come down to 5000 just for them.
If they accept, look reluctant for a moment and then take the handshake. If they don't accept, tell them 'thank you' and walk away. This miiiight bring 'em around; if not, *beep* 'em if they can't take a joke. If they will not give you conditions you are comfortable with and feel good about, you DON'T want to work there. There are many, many more fish in the sea, my friend. Not all of them bite.

I would be surprised of you received 4000 rmb per month in Kunming or anywhere in Yunnan Province.
You will be lucky to get your airfare reimbursed !!!!!!!! |
