marisak33..
Don't do it, brother or sister. Don't do it man. Please..please....don't do it. That's if you're going to Korea. If other things, do it.
I got 2 and a half months left in Korea. 2 and a half months way too long.....
I work in arguably one of the very best schools and situations you could get in Korea. A very lucky place. Excellent management. No teacher ever had a problem. 2.2 million won a month for beginner. On average, four 45 minute classes a day to kids. Clean, big school. Large, reputable, long established, wealthy school with 4 branches. Big apartment. Good living situation. And in one of the wealthy areas of Daegu. (Korea's 3rd largest city, and fairly prosperous also)
And I've had so much experience in Asia. And I love Asia. And I'm fairly sure I'm a level-headed guy.
But I loathe Korea, as most other foreigners I speak to, do also.
Don't do it to yourslef brother or sister. Be happy.

Funny post.
Interesting how many people i meet who really, really detest korea and Koreans compared with EFL destinations in Asia.
I sure liked the food, though. Girls were nice too! |

Yes to both!
Food is awesome and girls are cute but like JezzaYouBeauty!! I also find myself climbing the walls alot of the time. I don't hate the people at all, or the country as such. I can't quite put my finger on why, but it's hard to live here. I've also travelled alot, especially Asia and there's something lacking here from a foreigner point of view.
I hate making generalisations like this, but as other posters have commented, it does seem to be a feeling shared by many. |

I suppose, I also hate making the generalisations. And I'd never say I dislike the Korean people.
It really is the place. Like a vibe, a feeling in the air.....the big picture, sort of thing.
And overall, I don't feel great in Korea.
In the populace, I feel there IS more of a sullen, neurotic, zenophobic aggressive aspect about the people....as opposed to other Asian countries. But still, that's only some people, some of the time.
I guess I feel it's enough to let that kind of vibe get into the Korean air. And it's the Korean air I breathe everyday at the moment.
I'm happy to leave Korea. |

just left Korea hopefully for good.
There is a whole "follow the leader" mentality that is particularly disdainful to me, an American. Then there are the lies: just on Friday, when my director had agreed several times (he brought it up) to pay me early in the afternoon, (so I could get to the bank by 5PM to exchange money) he then told me I'd get paid after class, because "I can't trust American people."
I kinda got around this by asking for his son's telephone number (who works at the school)
me: do you have x's telephone number?
director: what for?
me: I need to borrow money for him
director: no, no, I'll pay you now.
well, I got the money after he:
a) tried to exclude my overtime
b) tried to tax me, despite being a temp
c) getting me to sign a receipt for it before having counted it (HE WAS 25,000 WON SHORT!!)
what a maroon! needless to say, I blew off his afternoon class.
spent a few mos. in Taiwan last summer, and have to say it was a nice place, the rents were cheap, weather way oppressive, etc.
Definitely costlier to setup your life there, including the necessity to get a scooter. Pain in the a** without one.
The oddities of the Taiwanese classroom included parents looking for free English lessons. One mom would join in the silly "run up to the board and spell" games.
I'd say if you have about 1-2 thousand dollars and are looking to go somewhere for the long run, Taiwan will pay off after 3 mos. or so.
BUT ABOVE ANYTHING ELSE: AVOID ROBERT PHILLIPS, RECRUITER IN TOULIO (YUNLIN CO.) HE HAS NEVER PAID ME MY SALARY.
8 MONTHS AND COUNTING. WHERE IS MY MONEY, ROBERT? |

Well, thanks to your earlier posting on this subject and the discussion that it generated both here and over on forumosa, it seems that Robert has gone to ground. I haven't seen a peep out of him since his involvement with the discussion here on this board, and judging by everything that transpired that seems to be a good thing for all foreign teachers looking at work through recruiters! |
