| Ok, I have been nosing around these forums a bit, and I am interested in Taiwan, but I am a little concerned over recent political aspects. I have also looked into Latin American some(Not nearly enough). I have a BA, no TEFL, camp experience, and I taught guitar. What is the best way to get going in Mexico? I know a TEFL is not absolute but helpful. Is it best to just show up and do most research in person? |

| TEFL or CELTA would open more doors for you...do consider it. If not for job placement connections through a course provider, then at least to allow you to apply for jobs that require experience - which are all the better paying jobs. |

Was that our school - Teachers Latin America? There are others in Mexico to consider as well.
What cities in Mexico are you thinking of researching? |

| I am actually very open as of now. I have a few months to decide on what route to take, so I do not have my heart set on any one particular location. I would like something more coastal, but that is not a deal breaker if I cannot find that. |

If you don't have some type of TEFL certificate and/or experience, it will limit your job opportunities in most places in Mexico. If you decide to get TEFL certification/training, you can take a course before coming to Mexico or after you arrive. A couple of in-country options: 1) Take a short TEFL training course here in Mexico. It will help you ease into the culture a bit, and most course providers offer assistance in locating jobs, or 2) apply for and get accepted at one of the chain schools that provide their own teacher training courses.
Of course, it's possible to just show up in a city of your choice, hit the bricks, and see what you can come up with on your own. However, this usually works better for teachers who have some training and experience. One way to go about it is to choose 3 or 4 locations that appeal to you. Then make some contacts (schools and/or teachers) in those places via Internet/email to get a feel for what the TEFL job market is like. If one of your choices sounds encouraging, go there, and see what you can come up with. If you don't find anything acceptable, then move on to "Location Choice B," etc. |
