| Hey! i have a q that's quite possibly been asked before, if so apologies. I'd be interested in hearing people's accounts who have travelled to several South American countries, maybe do a bit of compare/contrast and add which one you preferred and why! I'm having an incredibly hard time narrowing my focus on where to apply, and i know everyone has different reasons and preferences which is cool, but if anyone wants to throw in their ideas and opinions that'd rock! My general aim is to go somewhere in South America that has very community-oriented friendly folk but that's big enough for me to start building up some political/activist contacts for the future. I'm not overly concerned about cash but i do have to consider putting a dent in my student loans, and though Brasil is an option i wouldn't mind being somewhere i can put my bit of Spanish in use! Anyway i appreciate anything you could contribute =D |

| nicci, unless you have a teaching certification and you can work at an international school you will not be able to pay on your student loans. You are likely to earn $300-500 a month +housing. |

Building up political/activist contacts? What kind? There was an American woman who has spent quite a bit of time in a Peruvian jail for 'conspiring to overthrow the Peruvian government'.
Regarding cash? Nowhere in South America.. I've heard Colombia offers a little bit more than anywhere else because people are scared to go there. But for cash, you'd be better off in Asia or the Middle East.
I've taught in Brazil and traveled throughout Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and Venezuela.
Each is unique in its own way.. I could start with ethnicities of people? (Since I'm not sure where else to start).
Brazil: A BIG melting pot of everything. Even a million Japanese in Sao Paulo. Mostly Portuguese, Italian, Africa, Mulatto, and Indegenous. But large pockets of German, Polish, etc. in the south. All kinds in this country.
Argentina: Mix of Spanish and Italian ethnicities.
Chile: Predominately Spanish blood.. but a few spatterings of German in here in a few areas. Predominately Spanish though.
Bolivia: Very indegenous and mestizo and some caucasian too.
Peru: Very mestizo with the indegenous and caucasian. Some Japanese and African communities in Lima.
Ecuador: Mestizo, indegenous and caucasian.. with some african in the northwest corner of the country.
Venezuela: More caucasian and more african than Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador. More mulatto but mestizo too. |
