As I wrote earlier on this thread, the biggest problem is lack of leadership.

It will either be AMLO--whose profile will automatically be raised nationally due to the desfuero caper (talk about backfiring)--or Madrazo. No chance for the PAN, as they have done a worse job than the PRI and have lost more ground in every one of the interim elections.

A lot of folks don't like Madrazo--even among his own party. Which is why all the efort has been putting toward the desfuero of AMLO--who leads in the polls by a considerable margin, including nationally.

Sorry, by popularity contest, I meant the Mexican variety, of buying off every voter of every stripe.

Hey, I love the idea of a working city...but where's the money to pay for such things? Looks like the second floor on the Periferico may have been a good idea, but that money could have been better spent on mass transit. Realizing that, AMLO is now putting more money into mass transit. Do you remember the referendum in 2002? (or was it 2003?). The phone in was to give the yes or no to that second floor over other proposals. Where does the money come from all of a sudden for any and every project that crosses the mayor's desk?

I think when they check the books in DF after AMLO leaves to put on the presidenctial sash, they are going to find a mess.

Almost all outgoing pols leave a mess. It's there to give them some lead time to start disappearing with their ill-gotten gains. Rosario Robles left a mess. AMLO will probably leave less of one because he wants to be elected President.

Madrazo may be unpopular with foreigners (and with some Mexicans, I admit) but he is tough and nasty in a get-things-done kind of way and I think Mexico will move ahead nicely under his leadership.

The PRD is always talking about great programs like taxing foreigners extra, building houses for "everyone," and all that other bull dust that the great unwashed masses want to hear, even though they are smart enough not to believe it.

Put that little paiaso in the Tree House and he will make Salinas look good as a financial manager. Of cousre 'onest Andy won't take bribes, but all his rotten buddies will more than take up the slack.

Fox is a fool, I think we can all agree on that, but he has served some use in that he has given the PRI the kick in the pants they needed to come back bigger and badder than ever.

Fox was a little naive coming into power, and now he's something of a flounder, but I would never label him a fool. I think Mexico must be one hell of a ship to steer coming off 71 years of PRI, a fractured congress, and a lot of political wrangling. Now his wife...there's a fool.

Sorry, but for the first time ever on this forum I have to agree with Mike that Fox is a fool. If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck....chances are it's a duck. In this case, it's a lame duck--or at least that's how he is being labeled in the US. Fox's behavior is extremely foolish in that he keeps announcing that Mexico is a paradise, that both poverty and the EZLN are history, indicating that the paradise HE is living in is a fool's paradise.

Nobody believes anything the guy says. Which shows that the pueblo is a heck of a lot more savvy than its president.
