Wow! I haven't been on here in ages.
There's a new warning on the General discussion link requiering all posts to be teaching or job releted. I guess that's because of all the fighting and bickering on here before.
I think this applies to finding jobs, so I'll post it here.
Well, I have a question that I can't seem to figure out on my own so I was hoping you guys might have some information.
I taught in China for six months in 2004, and had a total blast. I've come back to Canada to go school and I'm already antsy about travelling again.
I'm currently dating this guy (he's amazing, or else I wouldn't even be waisting your time), and I'd love if he could go back to China with me (or even just on a short holiday overseas). Unfortunately he recieved a DUI last year, and was charged on March 23. He lost his liscence for a year, and I believe he has a criminal record because of it.
I've been searching the internet and can't find anything to help me out.
I want to know:
-If he'll be able to get a passport
-If he FOR SURE needs a pardon
-If he does, where to get one
-If he doesn't need a pardon to get a passport, where can he travel with an offense on his record.

Also, if any of you have gone through this please let me know any other information that might be helpful.

Thanks a bunch

Oh, and we're from British Columbia (meant to mention that) if it makes a difference.

I wouldn't ask for legal advice here; you'll get a mixed bag, and some of it is bound to be incorrect.

Call your local passport office, and the closest Chinese consulate.

Some countries such as Saudi Arabia demand police clearance before they will give the visa.

You'll have to check up whether the country you're going to does.

I can't imagine you'd have any difficulty getting a passport.

I am not familiar with Canadian law, but in many countries, like here in California, a first offense DUI does not have the weight of a serious crime. To be more specific, a first offender in California will only be charged with a misdemeanor, not a felony. A misdemeanor will not follow you around so to speak and you are not required to tell an employer you were convicted. A quick google search has told me that Canada often does something called an "absolute or conditional discharge" which means the person is found guilty but can honestly later say they were never convicted and the charge does not go on their record. So, the first thing to do is ask your boyfriend the details. If he had a good lawyer, it might not be an issue at all.

If I remember correctly, didn't our illustrious premier G. Campbell (don't want to say his full name Embarassed ) get convicted of a DUI offense in Hawaii and then he had some problems when he wanted to go back the next year for a holiday? Boo Hoo!

I am with a previous poster, this is info you need to check out yourself from a gov't website, not a forum board.

Hey Nikki, long time no see.

I have a friend from Montreal who's had 2 DUIs and that has not stopped him from getting a passport or working in China.

Unless you were being punny, it is rite of passage. Try www.dictionary.com
