Sekhmet,

Watch those tranquillisers! I gave one to my reasonably laid back cat before a 5 hour car trip - nightmare! Shocked She bounced from the walls of the wire cage to the ceiling, hung on for dear life upside down, fell in to her litter tray (still upside down, which is very undignified for a cat), started the circuit again. This continued for the whole five hours, with the most ungodly howls going on the whole time. Never again!

Still, good luck with your search for a vet, and with the transportation of kitty.

Put cat in sack with two bricks. Tie securely and drop into ocean. Problem solved.
Lucy K, England is NOT an island: it's but one part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland - albeit the largest part. Ignore the Celtic components at your risk! Add the Republic of Ireland and you get the geographic expression "the British Isles", although I'm sure the Irish don't appreciate it, and who can blame them.
Note for the literal-minded: the first paragraph should be taken with a generous pinch of salt. The second should be taken with a generous pinch of malt (whisky).

Aw, shucks!
Do you think I should charge for these little rays of sunshine?
Here's another, completely free of charge:
How do you make a cat go "Woof!"? Soak it in petrol and throw a match on it.
Warning for minors: ask a grown-up to help you, just in case you burn your fingers.

Can I say England is ON an island? I'm American... you know we don't understand geography! (but it became much clearer after the malt, thanks!) Laughing

Lucy, England could be an island, if only someone would invent a saw big enough to cut it off from Scotland and Wales. It would then be a simple matter of having it towed somewhere far away. Are you guys interested? You could call it New New England!
I hope you didn't put ice in that malt: it's a capital offence!

http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/quarantine/index.htm

this is the gov't info link for bringing pets into the UK, and it's quite clear. i've even had to email them, and got a response in a few days.

i never tranquilize my cat--he'd need something good for 18 hours, the way i travel. my theory is, yes, he'll be very upset with me when he finally gets out for good. but he'll get over it. he has to--no one else will feed the little maniac.

a few days before we go, i keep his travel cage out where he can be familiar with it, and get him used to his harness.
line some newspaper on the bottom, and don't feed him a whole lot for 6 hours before--this can help prevent motion sickness.

in fact, he refuses to eat for the whole trip, which worries me. i drip water on his fur during the times when he's with me--i don't take him in the cabin. he can't come out of his cage anyway, he won't be any happier, and many people are allergic to cats.
plus, he makes some horrific noises--no one needs those for 7 hours in the air.
