As the topic line says, i was recently offered a job with NOVA but JET is my first choice. NOVA wants an answer before march 17th and i will not hear back from JET until april, so can i accept the job with NOVA and if i get a position with JET just bail on NOVA?? Any thoughts? Thanks... |

If you accept a job with NOVA immigration will process your visa which may take up to 8 weeks. If JET decides to accept you you will have to tell NOVA that you will not be needing sponsorship and decided not to take the position.
Technically, you are not employed by NOVA until you arrive in the country with a valid work visa and they put you on the work schedule and you will have to cancel the work visa with NOVA if you want to switch as the visa categories are not the samae and you can not have two sponsors.
PS I would be careful about telling JET that you have accepted a NOVA contract and seeking sponsorship, as technically that will mean you have accepted a job with them. JET will not be keen to poach you away from another employer whom you have signed a contract with. I would avoid cancelling a work visa being processed, if it were me. With JET you wont end up in Japan until August anyway.
Your call, buddy. |

Probably not, but they are not stupid and they know that applicants are holding off on better job offers elsewhere.
Im not going to tell you not to, but be aware of the risks. What if JET says no?

There is no penalty for cancelling a work visa being processed while its being processed, but some schools make you pay a deposit which you get back once you are in Japan. If you cancel the visa with NOVA you will lose your deposit.
Dont forget there are people at the other end who spend time on your application, arranging your accomodation and putting you on the schedule and making sure your visa is in order. Quitting mid-application simply wastes everyones time, though Im sure that wont be a concern to you.
JET is run by the Japanese government through the Ministry of Labor, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Education. They hire 2000 new teachers every year and by definition the application process tends to be very bureaucratic. Everything is done by the book. If they offer you a job all power to you but you will still have to contact NOVA and tell them you have changed your mind. You better have a good reason for them.
You are not the first and you wont be the last to horse-trade and juggle job applications. Happens every year.
I can understand you wanting to go with JET over NOVA but if you really dont want to work with NOVA and are ready to dump them at the altar, I cant see why you would sign a contract with them. |

You agree to work for them, sign a contract, agree to sponsorship and dump them like a hot potato when a better offer comes along, even though your work visa is almost ready (if they action it immediately)
NOVA has been known to tag people along for 6-9 months until they offer them a place, in which its probably OK to say you are not going to wait that long and you have other offers. Once they offer you a definite place its my guess they will get the visa process into gear, and not before.
If the start is in September tell them now you are willing to consider a place but you will be looking at other offers in the meantime. It is unreasonable that they expect to keep you sitting by the phone for 6-8 months and they may even extend it until later.
If JET comes along you can then choose whether to accept the JET offer. If they say yes then tell NOVA you wont wait until September (financial reasons, better offer etc).
Personally I believe you shouldnt be looking at other job offers when you have signed a contract with a school and getting a visa with them as your sponsor as its a sign of bad faith. NOVA however has been known to d-ick around new hires with starting dates and making them put your life on hold for 7 months is unreasonable IMO. If you want to wait that long thats up to you, but you have no choice with JET as everyone goes at the same time, in mid-summer. |
