So, as the seasonal Salary Dance of Yabanci Teachers is about to begin, can I check some facts? anyone?
Turkish teachers at state schools make about 800YTL/mth
Turkish teachers at private schools make about 1.000-1.200YTL/mth(but said teachers claim this is very low, and if they can't get at least 1.5 YTL/mth next year, they will not renew)
starting salary offers for Yabanci teachers seem to be floating in the 1.5-1.8USD/mth (for K-12 fun and games), but is free rent still factored in? plane tickets and work permit money?
Turkish dershani teachers make 15YTL/hr, but in Bursa they can make 22/hr (said teacher is relocating to bursa...)
Hours - teaching hours at k-12 seem to be any where between 20 to 30 contact hours a week, big difference! And one school I talked to said classes end at 4:30, but all teachers are have to stay until 6pm for mtgs to review how they did that day, and what they can do better tom. and work "half days" on sat. and man the "occasional" info booth on Sundays. This puts us at over 50 hours a week, with the "occasional" 7 day work week thrown in.... are these normal private college working hours? or is just one slap-happy school asking its teachers to work so much?

and then, kids eat free- anyone negotiated contracts around free tution for thier kids? In place of free rent, for example? the slap-happy school told me I could work there full-time for free (as in, I would make no money) but my 2 kids would have the wonderful chance to attend for free! This sounds like a big stinky load of b.s, but any other experiences with this would be loved.
ps - since I am school shopping, both for a job and for my kids, if anyone is working at a K-12 school that they really like, even if you are not hiring, looking for more teachers.... but you think the kids are treated with respect, and it's not a total zoo... could you PM the name of your school, and I could check it out for enrollment! ta!

Check what an "hour" means. As far as I understand it in a lise it means 40 minutes but in a language school 60.

Language schools used to pay for contact time/break time with students but, as far as I'm aware, they don't any more. In Izmir I'd be surprised if they paid as little as 15 ytl an hour. In our place accommodation is still included (either shared flat, rent free; or susidized)

As far as the deal: free lessons = free tuition for your kids; that should be basic arithmetic, how much do you expect to be paid vs how much the school charges for tuition. It might be worthwhile in some schools. Your wife would have to be earning though.

hmmm, yes, this was the question.
the offer was only 25 teaching hours a week, but I would at the school from 8am to 6pm M-F, plus "half day" on sat, plus staffing an info both every so often on sundays. This seems like a lot of time for a primary school job. Are most primary schools asking for this much time?

they were offering to take my kids for 1.5USD/mth. seems a but high for kindergarten tution.... Smile

DON'T DO IT! That's a 10 hour day of your time...that will be spent either in a classroom, or in a teacher's office (with a bunch of other teachers bumping into you...for space). This is not normal....

The usual scenario (and the one that ghost worked under, in a famous Kolej somewhere in the South) is that you check into the staff room at about 8.30, then you go outside for the Turkish National song with the students. Then you have about 5 - 6 lessons (lasting 40 minutes) to teach. The school day finishes at about 4pm....and you should be finished by then too!

To ask you to stay on seems abusive, since you are not teaching every class all day, and you can do your lesson preparation and corrections during your "spare classes" of which you should have a few during the course of the day. When you have a "spare" you just do your lesson prep. and markings in the staff room at your desk. You should not have any work to take home after 4pm, if you use your time wisely during the "spares."

Normally, one is also on duty, either outside or inside the snack area, a few times a week.

Working till 6 will exhaust you, and you will not really be able to recuperate before you have to go through the same tiring process the next day.

At the Kolej ghost taught in, all the meetings were scheduled during regular school hours (8.30-4pm) and we were never called upon to work after that time, much less on Saturdays.

Last of all - one of the perks most commonly associated with Private Schools is free tuition for the progeny of the teaching staff. If you have to start paying for that too.....then you have got yourself into a double whammy situation.......you should walk....and offer your talents elsewhere.
