I've been in Sing for a few months and already I'm not sure if I can hack it for my whole 2 year contract.

My contract has no allowance for a teacher to quit, even if he/she gives notice. It says if I want to quit, I have to pay the school two month's salary! Now, I can't even save half my monthly salary, so that means paying back all that I've saved in more than 4 months.

So, I want advice from anyone who knows about this...can I just hop on a plane and never look back? If I ever do come back to Sing, will I be arrested as I pass through immigration? Can the school have me barred from re-entering?? Am I even allowed to leave the county without permission?? What's the deal??

I really don't think they can bar you from leaving the country!!

To be honest I fail to see how they can force you to pay two months salary either!! I guess you will have to forfeit your last pay at most - oh, also you might end up with a tax bill.

Your best bet would be to call Ministry of Manpower and ask them what you are required to do (in terms of taxes etc).

Don't panic - I highly doubt that a school is able to do any of the things you mentioned, but check witht he authorities first.

It would be courtesy to ofer to stay working witht he school until they found a suitable replacement. If it is an emergency and you have to go, well try explaining that - be sure of your legal obligations and go from there.

Good luck.
