To all you vets of wisdom out there, please help? I received my contract today via email. I was reviewing it and had a few questions regarding some of the small print. What should be on a contract?

I need to give four months notice if I am breaking the contract (one year)
and If I break the contract before this I have to pay for my original return airfare ticket that they have provided to me prior to starting the position. I guess this makes sense since they don't want to lose money. Is this normal?
They have the right to end employment with me without notice if I am guilty of: fraud, grave misconduct or dishonesty which in the opinion of the school is likely to bring the School into disrepute, commit material serious or persistent breach of any of the provisions in the contract.

Are contracts in China usually taken seriously? In reading other posts it seems not to be the case. My worst fear is getting over there and them not living up to the contract. Are most contracts signed from overseas?

All comments appreciated,
cheers,

Jo Smile

That sounds like they leave themselves plenty of room to let you go without your airfare. My contract has no such clause and I only have to give one month notice,as do they.

Jojo,
a little surprised by the four month notice period. Normally, you can terminate your contract a month later, sometimes two, although public schools want you to serve notice as long before as possible 9understandable, isn't it?).
As for airfare, you stand to get your airfare paid out at the end of your term. Very few pay it upon your arrival. It might be a good idea to ask them to prorate it and add the portions to your monthly salary.
Dismissal: I have never heard of an expat not receiving his last pay if he got dismissed, but maybe we foreign nationals enjoy a privilege here! Most Chinese forfeit their last salary if they resign from their jobs! Many employers actually dock some of their Chinese employees' pay!

Wish you the best of luck

Xie Xie!

I am going to be paid in Canadian funds into a bank account once over there. Yes Roger they are paying my airfare in advance and It will be a return airfare as well:) Guess I'm one of the lucky ones.
Now I'm wondering about what banks are international in the area so I can open up one up here..so much to do, so little time. Confused
