Does anyone know anything about this town, or have experiences there? All I've been able to find out online is basically that it's 700 yrs old, had 43k people in 2000, and has ruins and a big wall. I was pretty much offered a job teaching there tonight. I was rather surprised when the phone rang and it was one of the schools I had applied to... the accent is kind of hard to understand over the phone. But she had someone call me back a little bit later (a native English speaker) who I talked to for a while.
Anyways, it's for 28k/month, teaching science and math to grade 7 students (~35 kids/class) at a government school. 15hrs teaching per week, and I'll have to be at school the full day. It's a new program (teaching science in English) at this school, so they don't have much in the way of materials, so I imagine there'll be a fair bit of lesson planning involved.
Does this sound like a reasonable position? Any points you can think of that I should clarify/find out? I know people say to be careful about accepting the first job offer you get... but if it's a good one there shouldn't be a problem...
Thanks for anything you can tell me... I'll need to get back to them within a few days to let them know my decision, and in the mean time I have a contact there I can ask questions of. |

Yes, that's about it. But there are also some national parks in that area. It could be a good place if you really like nature/the country. The name means "Diamond Wall" [really "Wall Diamond"].

Reason doesn't apply in Thailand. On the surface it looks OK - 28K for 60 hours, but...
probably 50+

Very bad news. Didn't we go through this before??
28k for 60 hours: pretty good.
28k for 160 hours: BAD.

No one will know what's going on. You'll probably have to design the whole course curriculum [which can have its advantages] and they'll probably change their minds about this and that half a dozen times.

You need to find out about length of contract, visa [who pays?], work permit [get one? who pays?], any insurance? holidays/sick days/days of leave? bonus? overtime? any other farangs there? if so, what can they tell you? Was the native English speaker you spoke to a teacher there? Try and find out how boring the town is. Computers in the office? Internet connection? You'll need something to do during all those hours that you're sitting around the office? Canteen on campus? A/C classrooms? Whiteboards? Classroom resources? Basically what do they have that would give you a reason to teach there? |

I think maybe a bit larger of a city would be more suitable for me. Doesn't have to be Bangkok, but I need stuff around me!
I don't know that I could handle 160 hours of actual teaching a month, even if they paid 75k instead of 28k for 60. But it does seem on the low end of the pay scale.
I was told (yes the guy I spoke with is a teacher) that last year (the first year of the MEP science program) they basically changed his course content half way through (added in geophys or something). And yes, there would be... "a lot of freedom"... on my part on what I tought.
contract: 1yr
visa, work permit [who pays?]: ?
any insurance? no
holidays/sick days/days of leave? ?
bonus? ?
overtime? ?
any other farangs there? 5 i think it was
I sent an email asking a bunch of questions and am waiting for a response. Tonight I received another call from a school in Phitsanulok offering 33k for 16hrs max per week of math/english (again in school all day), but she gave a lot more details than the first one (visa/wp refund after contract, 3-4weeks paid holidays in October + Thai public holidays, 15 sick days, no insurance). Phitsanulok seems a larger/more fun place to be, but I still need to find out more details about both positions.
It'd be nice if there was a post somewhere outlining sort of the standard minimum entry-level job package for Thailand in general (or outside of Bangkok at least - it's probably about the same, just higher in BKK). Something like, if they offer much less than this, don't take the job even if you're dying to live in XXXX.
Oh, also the highest offered wage position I applied to was for 40k in Bangkok, so over 30k for outside of that city doesn't seem too bad... right?? |

The 160 hrs./mo is in reference to the "I'll have to be at school the full day" comment.
8 hrs/day x 5 days/wk x 4 wks/mo = 160, so it's not teaching hours but hours of your time. In other words if they're going to pay you 28k then they should not expect you to be on campus all day. The offer would be reasonable if they said outside of classtime you can do whatever you want. |

The thing you need to understand is that anything under 40k isn't really enough. Even 40k is only about 1000 USD. Your salary is just a base salary. You will need to do extra work. Without it you'll be living from paycheck to paycheck or existing at a very basic level. So obviously you need to get the highest salary that you can but it has to be for the fewest hours possible, including non-teaching "office" hours.

Yes, once again 33 for 64 teaching hours/month is good,
but not for 160 teaching/office hours per month.
Press them on this issue before accepting any position. If they want you to be available for 40 hours/week they should simply pay you
more. It's not hard to understand. |
