Hello,
My name is Ben Doran and I have just arrived in Guangzhou and am seeking teaching work. I am forced to confine my search to this neon incomprehensible city because my girlfriend has accepted a one year contract with an architecture firm here. I am tesol certified and have a degree but am finding it hard to find work online. Any help from people already in town would be much appreciated. And I mean ANY!! I'd be very interested in meeting up with teachers here for a beer or a coffee just to find out more about this city (where's good to eat? where can a fella get a drink around here) and the work opportunities available. I understand it is a bad time of year to be looking but I'm hoping to get something before June...which is when my money will start to run out. If anyone feels like meeting up or just emailing me some information I can be contacted at [email protected] or [email protected]

I hate do to this, but someone has to throw the first punch.

What is your current Visa status in China? Is it an L or Business visa? Ramaining and working on anything other than a Z visa is harder to do. It may soon be impossible to convert a L or business Visa into a Residence permit once you are here (see the thread relating to the new residence permit and do a search here for other visa related conjecture).

And if you are really hard up for a job, EF will be hiring soon for the summer. 40 hours per week but they will lie and cheat to make you legal.

The Canadian International whatever advertises monthly in the THAT'S; why do they advertise? Because they have a high turnover of staff. And I believe most people walk away from them - including me (after a demo lesson, for which they actually paid and gave me a nice review). The least I can say about them is: they are not legit. On the other hand, I did hear about improvements. Maybe they have got their act together after so man years here...

EF also is in TIANHE though not in the same street (but not too far down the highway out of town).

The market is not in excellent shape at this moment; all those employers we are discussing here are pimps, or in nicer language: agents who will never assume responsiblity for you.

I am right now holidaying in Peking (just a weekend, really); if you like, we can meet up in downtwon Guangzhou one of these days and I can point you to other possibilities in the coming week.

Thanks for the information and I will go and have a look at the Canadian School. I just moved into my apartment in Tianhe today and am not that worried about the visa situation just yet...I came on a tourist visa. This seemed unavoidable at the time as I had to wait until my girlfriend was offered a job before deciding on a city. Roger I'd enjoy meeting up when you have the time and once I am moved in (hopefully by the end of today) I will PM or email you to organise something.
