Back to sex. How about those cabanas you see all over Latin America. Well, I can't say I have seen them personally. Goes against the pro-vi code and all that. But I *hear* you can rent them for a couple of hours, and some are pretty nice inside...last rate I knew of was around $20 american for 6 hours....in Venezuela....what do you guys and gals know of these types of "love shacks".

Ah, come on guys, we all know you've spent time in seedy motels at some point in your life.... Very Happy

In Santiago:

Sunday-Thursday 9000 pesos (about $16) for a full night (until 9am) for a standard room with ensuite, aircon/heating, seriously unpleasant porn on telly and a couple of free drinks.

The delux rooms are 17000 pesos a night and have jacuzzis and are about 4 times bigger. Same filthy porn though.

Oh and all the beds have those minging plastic sheets that bed-wetting kids have to use...uuugggggghhhhhhh

Friday and Saturday night the cost is a little under double...

Normal hotels, in an area where you'd want to be but probably not as decent (new, looked after etc) as a motel, cost at least 14000 a night.

Don't know about Argentina (but there are a lot. Mind you, you can get a pretty decent hotel for a night in BsAs, no dodginess involved for $12-15 so i guess they're pretty cheap) or any other country as having my own flat means there are no family members to escape from like when i'm in chile with the girlf Very Happy

I salute your honesty, Matt.

Have seen a few sleazy hotels in my time, but not many recently enough for the prices to matter here. In Ecuador, you can get into a reputable, no porn place with en suite, and even breakfast for around 10-12 dollars, sometimes a bit less. So I guess that knocks the sleazy market on the head, although a friend of mine in the hotel business said that on weekends often half their guests have checked out by midnight. Probably have to get her home to mum.

A good friend of mine, married, says he often takes his wife to a cabana if they are going to be staying over in a nearby city for whatever reason (this is in Quisqueya--the DR). He says they are cleaner, more comfortable, and cheaper than getting a room at an all-inclusive or boutique hotel.

http://weblogs.clarin.com/conexiones/#001725

The 2nd article down.

How many times do the girls in your respective latin american countries believe to be correct and proper before getting their kit off and jumping into bed with a bloke?

In the 'western' world, it would appear that Swedes are the girls to hook up with (reinforcing the stereotype we have in england that all swedish women are porn-obsessed nymphos)...You american girls out there seem a quite prudish...37% of you prefer kisses and hugs?????????

I know that ecuadorian girls can be very very prudish when it comes to sex, the conservative catholic upbringing and all that, Argentines are (or so it seems) like the Spanish (as in pretty open and liberated when it comes to sex etc for a Catholic country). Chileans are a kind of mix-they very often have 'european' views but sex is a fairly taboo topic. My girlfriend says she has never, ever discussed sex with her girlfriends despite them all being very 'european' minded and all having boyfriends/husbands. Sex is all my english girlfriends ever talked about...

That link also mentions an all-terrain wheelchair which made me think about how the disabled are treated in latin cultures. In 16 months in Latin America i think i've seen 3 people in wheelchairs and 2 or 3 people walking around on crutches (due to a broken leg). In england you see people every day on crutches or in wheelchairs, it's normal. When my brother broke his leg in Italy he went out and about on his crutches just like he would have done in England. And got stared at by almost everyone. It seems that Latin cultures keep their invalids hidden away from society and don't let them free in the streets. Embarassment of being disabled or having a disabled relative i guess? Shameful for the family? Seems strange to me though.

Sounds like we're not doing something right.

On the disabled note- I see quite a lot of disabled people in the streets of Quito. One thing you see more of here than in many countries is amputees. (I've been told that due to limited medical facilities, this is often the typical treatment for a fracture. )
Also, thalidomide was taken off the market rather later here than in most places, and I know a few people who have unformed or partially formed limbs as a result. The guy who works in my local shop is missing most of an arm, and my landlord is in a wheelchair. (Don't know why, but he seems to have been in it for some years.)
Two people I've worked with have disabled children...

On the subject of "things we may be doing wrong... Very Happy "

Don't get yourself flogged over it, Moonraven. Some of us who have been out and about for a while have probably figured it out by now...those who haven't probably never will. Razz

And Elnota, could you tell me where you got that study...it could make interesting classroom discussion fodder.

Regards

Justin

I haven't noticed any great difference in the number of people I see here in this city using wheelchairs and crutches and those "back home." I have noticed that many of the buildings and sidewalks here aren't wheelchair-user friendly. Actually, many of the sidewalks aren't anykindofperson-user friendly. Most newer and remodeled areas (sidewalks, parks, public buildings, etc.) have wheelchair ramps, and newer multi-story buildings have elevators.

a little off topic, but there is this charity started by a friend of my mother that gives free wheelchairs to people all over the world. The founder, an engineer who is from my hometown, designed a low cost wheelchair after seeing the many disabled people crawling through the streets of India while on vacation.

here it is... http://www.freewheelchairmission.org/

my family supports this organization and I urge you to do the same! A donation if $41.17 buys a wheelchair for someone who needs it.
