It seems that buxiban.com is down-- I just get a blank HTML document when I go there. Is this the work of a hacker, some sort of shut-down, or a glitch of some kind?

I just heard of the place and wanted to see what information is there.

Yes, I've noticed the same thing.

Anyone know of any other good websites that focus on Taiwan?

Yeah, tried them. Blank page as well. Perhaps they've shut down? They were a pretty good place to get the dirt on schools here. A moment of silence please...

They were also extremely useful for getting the hours of Taiwanese consulates.

It's been down for awhile. For a couple of weeks the home page would come up but then nothing else. Couldn't log in, couldn't view pages, nothing.

The good news is that word is that the site will be back online again soon, possibly by the middle of next week.

If anyone has any real issues in the meantime maybe they could send an email request for assistance.

I have just been using the site and didn't experience any problems at all. Everything seems to be functioning well for me!

I was having trouble with anything related to their database. I've now registered, so whatever it was that wasn't working now is.

Harvesting personal information under false pretense for commercial or criminal intent is not uncommon on Taiwan.
Everyone should be very careful about registering their personal information with Taiwanese business organizations.
Foreigners have no rights on Taiwan that includes protection from identity theft.
Welcome to Taiwan.

This from the buxiban admin. Some comprehensive work is being undertaken on the school database. Therefore anything tied to the database including school listings and registrations are likely to be unreliable for a few more days and there may even be a bit of downtime. Everything is apparently going to be back online and working well soon.

Are you suggesting that this is what that website is doing?

I don't see it. The site is a goldmine of information and much of this is still visible online. Anything attached to the school database seems to have been a bit unreliable of late, but that is no doubt inline with the database updating that is going on. The information available to registered users is extensive and I doubt that anyone would go to the trouble of compiling such extensive information just to harvest personal information.

If people wanted to harvest personal information from registered users then they would probaly just set up a free website such as Geocities, tantalize people on message boards with titbits of information, and then require them to join up to a faceless organization that offers very little information on it's website. Yes that's right - the organization I am referring to is Aristotle's very own SSET.

If people need to be careful in providing their personal information to information harvesters, then why should anyone register with you? How can you guarantee that you are who you say you are? I would say that buxiban.com has done a pretty good job of proving that they are above board. Can't say the same for you and your site Aristotle.
