There have been many posts dealing with the legal requirements to work in China. Whether enforced or not, you legally need a degree to obtain a Z-visa and Resident Permit. I hadn't realized myself how strict they are getting in Jiangsu about the degree requirement. What hasn't really been discussed is (that I have seen) is what about the people who came here with just TESOL before the BA requirement was in place? Are they grandfathered in? I have a friend who is on a Z-visa which will expire in 3 months. She has no degree, her visa is legal as it was obtained before the change. Will they go back into file and check everything out again or will they just renew her Resident Permit with no problems. She asked me for help in trying to help her find a new job. Will she have a problem? Does anyone have any first-hand experience with this? She has been here for about a year and a half and I would like to help her out.

The only grandfathering I have heard of in China is vehicle tags...in cities like Shangahi and Dalian and Beijing forthat matter ...tags are no longer issued to certain type of vehicles and they must have a tag from an existing vehicle..

As to teaching...in Dalian a teacher....last week was able to trade a "F" visa for a "z"...even though it has been reported it is no longer allowed...He has a Art School Degree...so I would say..you never know until you try...the main thing is not to metion it....and don't give them any cause for futher checking ...

As I have saif before..law or no law...there is no absolutes in China...

I am also in Jiangsu Province - and have been for almost two years. I have no Certificates, Degrees, or in fact - anything. They want me to come back here for the third year and nobody has mentioned that I will have any problems getting the Visa.
