A contract does not protect you against xenophobia. It can not guarantee that your FAO is a decent human being, truthful, appreciative, competent, or caring. The same may be said regarding other administrators or colleagues.

A contract does not guarantee that your students want to learn English or will feel privileged to have a native English speaker. It does not prevent students from cheating, talking in class, or disrespecting you.

A contract does not guarantee that certain "rights", such as privacy, are considered as such in China. Finding out that your school runs your computer through a LAN to make snooping into its contents easier does not constitute a violation of the contract. Intrusions into your personal life are not forbidden by the contract. A contract does not prevent your FAO from monitoring your activities, enlisting other teachers to report the substance of your conversations, or promoting the atmosphere of a police state in your institution.

You are not guaranteed job satisfaction, the right to a private social life, or a social life of any kind. Nothing is said about the sincerity or motives of people who "befriend" you.

No guarantees that you will have quiet accomodations in which to live, or that your neighbors will not awaken you in the morning, prevent you from napping in the afternoon, or deciding at what time you go to sleep at night.

A contract does not guarantee that you will live in a healthful environment, or that you will be in an asbestos, mold, or toxin/pathogen free zone.

A contract does not guarantee that your time here will not be one of the worst experiences of your life.

And that is why a contract should be about money and only money...forget about what the schools and companies can guarantee and find your own....
By controling your enviroment you can enjoy yourself a lot more and make the work periods bearable...and if you get paid well...you will feel better about everything else

Lets fight for our right to quit the job when we feel that we are being treated ill and when we hate the place.
Why not?
In the world I know you can resign from the job you hate - give your notice and go!
Here, you have to stay no matter how abominably you are being treated by your school otherwise those resentful communists will spoil your good opinion or make your life hell.

changing visa laws, lies, corruption, lack of information. I've said it before and I will say it again, we need a teachers union.

I'm sure everything would change if all the teachers got together and held a strike for a day. Imagine all that media attention in light of the Olympic games. People need to know that we have a right of choice, and not to be told!

Can someone explain what happens to a teacher who bails upon receiving their passport back. For the record, I am very happy in my gig but a friend in a nearby large city has been less than thrilled with his employer. They have misled him, changed schools on him and generally jerked him around.

I'm on my first contract here and things are great so I'll ask, is this just the way it goes? If, when he gets his passport back with z-visa, he moves out and looks for another job what retribution can his current employer unleash on him?

Thanks.
