I'm still weighing my options on the insurance debate. My coverage from back home ended last year, so I'm presently not insured. I plan to stay in Japan for 6-7 more years before returning home to Canada.

I return home every summer to get my annual check-up, dental work, etc, as I don't trust the medical profession in Japan.

If I were to travel home and get dental work done, would any insurance policies cover me out of Japan?

you can use National health insurance overseas, as long as you provide receipts for any work done in Canada.

I have never had any problems with dentists in Japan, and the care has been quite satisfactory, IMO.

Does this only apply to emergency visits to the doctor, dentist, etc or can I claim regular (cleaning, fillings) dental work too?

NHI covers you while you are overseas, but you have to pay for everything until you get back. You supply the receipts, and you get reimbursed for whatever has been done. HOWEVER, you get reimbursed for the 70% that NHI would normally have paid in Japan. So, if you have costs not usually covered in Japan, you won't get reimbursed for them.

Good point Glenski. Isn't it also true that they will pay 70% of what the COST is here in Japan as well? In other words, if a doctor's visit in Japan is 2000 Yen, then they would pay 1400 Yen. But if the doctor's visit abroad cost, say $50 US, then they would still only pay 1400 Yen or about $14 US. For this reason my Japanese friends always take supplemental travel insurance if traveling abroad.
