I've used LLoyds to send money home, but does anyone have advice about sending money from Sydney Australia to Japan ?

What's the best way of getting your money over there ?

Should I use a Visa debit card and take it out at ATM's in Japan, Or is the exchange rate/commission a killer ?

Or just bank transfer ? Lloyds rates are quite reasonable, but I've never used Australian banks. Do they charge a lot, and do you get a competitive exchange rate ?

Appreciate any help.

Us your debit card from your Oz bank. As long as it has a Cirrus or Plus symbol on the back of your card, you can use them in post office ATMs in Japan. Commission charges and exchange rates will vary, but they should be OK. Make sure your daily withdrawal limit is set high so you can take out more than a few hundred dollars/day and therefore make fewer transactions.

Thanks Gordon.

I'm moving back to Tokyo and more or less wanted to avoid getting stung on lousy exchange rates buying Travellers Chex etc. It's a pity we don't have a LLoyds down here.

My Visa doesn't have Cirrus logos etc. but I understand it can be used O/S.

Thanks again.

On a related note, a friend wants to send me some money from Canada to Japan. Any ideas? It's probably a small amount and I know it is not worth it to try and cash cheques here. I think a wire transference would be half the amount of the gift.

For small amounts it's probably not worth the expense. You could try cash. Maybe the exch rate/commissions are the same, but may be worth seeing what he can get for Yen in Canada.
Or tell him he owes you a beer when you get back ! Very Happy

Do Plus system bank cards work at the post office machines!?! I live in a smaaaaaaallllllll town, and I can never find a machine that will take a foreign bank card. There was one that worked with cirrus but to get plus to work I have to go to the city.

My town takes Plus cards in the PO ATM. Can't comment on all machines.
