Chiense schools hire for their fall (autumn) semester when it is spring in Australia/New Zealand/South Africa. In other words: they hire as late as possible, usually at the very beginning of the new term.
IT is the Chinese way of muddling through - always postponing important decisions, then finding themselves in a tight spot.
You have therefore five more months to go...

So, if one is already in China, you're saying that about August/September is the prime time to find a place to work?

I know at my School - they start looking for new Teachers for the Semester commencing 1st September around May.

We need 4 new teachers to commence in September, and I know they wish to have them lined up prior to the holidays which commence (for the Chinese teachers) around the end of June.

I think most School would be similar - at least 3 months ahead.

At my university, for a term that commences late August, the application review process begins in March and hiring decisions are typically made during April and May. I would say now is a good time to be submitting your resume (but you may not here back for another month or so).

If we were to add an additional staff member to our staff, we would begin advertising NOW to give us time to sift. Finding the ft you want is rather more testing than searching for that needle in a haystack! If we were prepared to take any warm body, we wouldn't bother to advertise until August.

I would have to say that if you are talking about a professional, organized school (there ARE some in China, right?) - - perhaps one that has foreign personnel influence - - they would start hiring now, or at least accepting applications. Many schools will start advertising around May and then frantic, unorganized schools that you may just as soon NOT want to work in, will hire, oh let's see, August 28th perhaps (for a September 1st school start date)?

JonnyBGoode,

As you have probably garnered from previous posts, it depends on the organizational acumen of the school to which you apply and, sometimes, the whims of the waiban.

Suffice it to say, however, that if you are still looking for gainful employment come August and you read a job ad that begins with "beautiful," best to stay away unless it's followed by Yunnan or Hainan or Hangzhou because that means their desperate and probably for good reason. Wink
