Won't work...in winter they DO teach without heating here. Personal comfort of students and teachers generally gets zero consideration. After all, these things cost money to provide...

G'day all

About this aircon thing ......... About a month ago, we had 2 quite hot days in Shanghai. The door was opened, the windows were opened and with the groundswell of 'little emperor enthusiasm' for even greater comfort the aircon was switched on - HEAVEN FORBID!!! ...and it's stayed on ever since when the temps have gone up during the day.

Am I just a bit lucky or always prepared to just get into the negotiation game with the powers at be.

Another side issue here. We've been entitled to breakfasts at the uni hotel until now. The hotel restaurant has just been leased and is no longer schackled to the 'Iron Rice Bowl' There's been a comensurate improvement in the facility, the service and the food - It's a whole new ball game - quite excellent. My boss caught me yesterday and said the cost to the college had increased 3 fold and, from now on, my wife couldn't have breakfasts there. HUH? We love our breakfasts there! He then went on to say that I could ...welll until the end of the month anyway!!

HOLD ON A MINUTE Mr "X" ...then I told him about what he wrote in the contract. .... Great for me - beautiful breakfasts all through the Summer but come September I'll have to pay if I want that luxury.

...sounds like the sort of school that would benefit from having its staff walk out without notice.....

This is indeed a very effective bargaining tool if your staff is cohesive enough to pull it off. And I can assure you mine is...

But it would have to happen in a LOT of schools. Many schools in the south are simply not equipped with heating equipment, and it gets ccccccold! Even schools in the north have heat that is so ineffectual that it's like trying to warm up Tiananmen Square with a birthday candle.

Some of this is definitely cheapness on the part of the school owners and/or their landlords. But some of it is a culturally-based higher tolerance for discomfort, combined with a dislike for strong heat and AC systems. It seems many Chinese would RATHER pull on some layers than crank the heat way up.
