As a potential English instructor in Dhahran for the fall, how would one expect the students to behave towards an American teacher? I'd like to have some idea about this before I head over to the Kingdom.
Thanks,

As an American instructor in Saudi, you will generally be treated with respect-as long as you respect your students and their ideals. Like in most countries of the world, there is a "love-hate relationship" between the natives and the Americans. On the one hand, they love our culture, media, and personality traits. On the other hand, they hate our politics.
There is blatant nationality-ism in Saudi...Americans are treated slightly better than British/other Europeans, followed by Levant Arabs, South Asians, etc.. Indians and Bangladeshis are generally on the bottom of the pecking order. |

If you do a competent and professional job the students will react positively. In my experience students here behave better than do adult male students in the UK or Europe.
Which institution in Dhahran are you headed for ? |
