From what I understand there are three different Westgate programs - I'm interested in hearing from someone whose done the university program.

Basically, how did you like it? What was great and what sucked? How many hours a day did you work (including travel time)?

And one more thing - it only lasts for less than four months, so what kind of Visa do they give you? The fact that it lasts only a few months could be a good thing, in that I'd be able to search for a job within those few months and the better jobs seem to be found by being in Japan. It's either this, or a year-long contract in places I've never been. So what do you think?

Thank you in advance for your responses.

Have only heard of the one program myself -- Westgate Corporation (not university). Friend of mine came here from Canada through them and worked at a university. He was fortunate enough to land something during that time so he could stay past the 3-4 month time limit.

There are programs that last a full year. I was offered a position in their Academy running from August through July. I ended up turning it down because it looked like the conditions weren't that great: too many hours (I don't recall how many, but something like 25-30), too broad a mix of classes (children, businessmen, individuals, etc.), restrictive rules on the company-provided housing, which was very expensive, etc... All that said, though, since I didn't take the job, I can't actually offer a valid assessment of what it is like to work there.

Thanks for the responses.

Has Anybody out there actually done the university program. I'm interested in hearing about first-hand experiences.

I`m on the University program (extra-curricular), for which I have a one year visa, even though the contract is only for 3 months. So far I like it. Westgate does the important things like pay on time and provide a decent apartment and startup amenities. Whenever I`ve had a question someone has gotten back to me right away.

Your hours and teaching load varies with the university you wind up at, as do the working conditions. My coworker and I have our own office and regular internet access, small but quiet classrooms. We have a long commute, but we also have been able to make friends with some of the Japanese staff at the university. Other teachers have a shorter commute, but don`t have regular interaction with Japanese staff, might share classrooms, or have more limited internet access. THe number of teachers at each school also varies, depending on the number of students signed up, so you may or may not wind up with other teachers to talk to about lesson plans. I`m enjoying the experience so far, and would recommend it to anyone who wants to check out Japan on a short term contract.

Thanks for the post Judo. Sounds like a good position - and nice that you'll have that visa another 9 months.
