Watch out though, you will alot of responses from non-native speakers. I am looking for 2 teachers at my school right now. I thought I wouldn't have too much trouble because the salary offered is about the best around but I am having a real hard time finding qualified teachers.

Allow me to clarify a few points

1) I am not a recruiter, I am just a teacher helping out my school.

2) I didn't say that being a native speaker automatically made someone a good teacher, nor it is that the only qualification my school is looking for (BA and TESOL/TEFL needed) but be honest with yourself, you have been in China a long time, do the Chinese want a teacher from a non-english speaking country, no matter how many degrees they have? Would the Chinese gov't even issue them a z visa (this I really don't know). Not only do the students want to be taught English, they usually want to learn about Western culture., a teacher from an Asian country would be no use in this capacity. The fact is, my school only wants native english speakers.

Roger,

For someone who has worked in China for so long you sure seem to have a knack for choosing schools at the bottom of the pile. Anyway, that's what I gather from the way you talk about your students. I'm at a pretty low level college and have lots of students who are interested in Western culture and from the number of middle school students who approach me at McDonald's I'd say several of them are serious about speaking English.

To call someone delusional because their experience is different than yours is perhaps a bit extreme.

Roger,
I find it strange that you think students are not interested in Western culture. I have taught many different age groups before, I found that most of their questions are about my country and different customs we have. I now work at a training centre. Most of my students are businessmen and students going abroad so they are just as interested in learning about Western culture as they are about english. As for me being delusional, I think not.

The ones who are interested in learning English want to learn about Western culture. The ones who aren't are only interested in the NBA.

How does wanting to learn about western culture equate with learning English.

There is about 25 or 30 countries throughout the world, who have English as their first language and they are not all Western countries.
