Besides Jalan Jaksa, where are good places for impoverished English teachers to drink beer in Jakarta?

Being a muslim myself I don't drink anymore, but 'Pasir Putih' in Kemang on a Tuesday night is good. Great music (if Tequila are still playing).

Another great place is 'Score' at Citos (Town Square).

You're not serious are you? Salam = muslim.

If you were then I'd suggest Hero supermarkets in the foreign food section. But if you want something REALLY tasty go to Saint Cinamon in most plazas are get an almond one. Yummy!

Jaysuz Christus Chestette! You live in a country full to the brim with Muslims and you make pork pie jokes? Lordy. Anyway why do you think pork pies are full of 4 skins? There aint much need for them here is there?

On the beer thing - if you're a cheapskate git who doesn't want to pay bar prices, go to your local warung and score some 'Tangs and sit at home listening to your pirate CDs and smokin crap weed.

Well, I am a cheapskate git who doesn't want to pay bar prices, but I don't want to drink at home either. Jalan Jaksa is OK, but it would be nice to have a change occasionally.

Personally I hate Jaksa. Too full of bules, narkotik, pelacur and preman. The locals are nice though, went for maghrib prayer there once when visiting a friend. I think they really regret what has happened to their neighbourhood though. Normally I avoid Jaksa like the plague.

Well, speaking for myself, I'd rather hang out with the sort of people you describe than religious people.

bules - foreigners (white guys)
narkotik - drug users/pushers
pelacur - hookers
preman - criminals (pick pockets and worse)

Not my favourite crowd to be honest.

Hmmm, maybe not your favourite crowd, but definitely an interesting crowd. I know the full set down Jaksa, not to mention the amusing bencongs - who know I'm not into that kind of thing by the way. The narkoba scene isn't exactly in your face and I've never ever had a problem with thieving barstards trying it on.

Hotel Sentral in Pramuka is my crowd, plus you get to watch the motorbikes race at high speeds down the main road late at night.

Girlie men crack me up also. Another good place for entertainment and converstaion is down on the train tracks late at night. Can't rememberthe name of the area, but just don't hang around till too late as the polisi tend to break it up at times.
