Hey everyone, here's my deal as of this morning: I interviewed with AEON last week in New York and made it through to the personal interview and felt like it went pretty well. This morning, a week later, the interviewer calls and says that they want to hire me but have to wait for the right position to open up and that i should be finding out about more specifics by the end of April.

Does this mean that I'm actually hired or was that polite company lingo for 'riiiight don't call us, we'll call you.' ??

I really want to know if this was a positive or horribly negative phone call because A) i just really want to be hired and (more importantly in the short term) B) I have an interview with NOVA on friday thats kind of a hassle to travel to.

Should I go to the NOVA interview because I'm too ignorant to realize I just got the brush off...

or has this sort of "just give us some time" thing happened to people before and it'll be fine and I shouldn't bother with NOVA ??

Thanks a lot for your advice,
Incredibly Nervous Confused

EDIT- Just giving it some more thought and the guy also said that if I don't hear from him by the end of April I should call them to work things out. So it can't really be a 'dont call us we'll call you' cuz even if they dont call me, they still want me to call them. So thats gotta be good, right?

It sounds promising, but do the Nova interview. If Nova wishes to hire you, then call AEON and stress that you would much prefer to work for them, but that you have another offer (do not say what company), and that you would really appreciate if they could give you clarification on your possible employment. If they turn you down, or you feel like you are being led, take the Nova job. If you don't really want to work for Nova or the interview is really too much of a hassle, then just be patient.

Thanks a lot for the advice, GuestofJapan. Even if they had yelled YOU'RE HIRED over the phone I'd probably still go to the NOVA interview just because thats the kind of nervous, untrusting type I am.

But if anyone has any first-hand experience with having to wait to be offered a firm position, it'd really calm me down. Thanks a lot.

I had my interview in Toronto in December .. at the end, the recruiters told me they would let me know within two weeks if I'd be offered a position. About 10 days later, they called and said I would be made an offer in February, as I'd asked to go in July.

February 5, they called back and offered a specific position, pretty much exactly what I'd requested.

My understanding is that Aeon (and likely the other big chain schools) like to build up a pool of applicants that they'll assign at a later date .. it seems they need about four months' lead time to assign a position because this is the length of time a departing teacher typically gives for their notice, and this is the length of time required to process a work visa application.

From what you've said, it sounds like you're in. You could call the recruiters back and ask when, specifically you'll be hearing about a position.

YMMV, of course, but this is what I've experienced, so far.

Hey thanks a lot cstory. That makes me feel a whole lot better. I had told them I wanted to leave in September, so that sounds like just the same situation that you were in.

Maybe in that case I really will skip NOVA on Friday? Any more opinions out there?

You didn't mention requesting to go in September before. I don't think you have anything to worry about. They simply don't know where a position will open up yet.

Well, you could always go to your interview with NOVA...if anything it will be extra practice and give you an idea whether you like them or not.

As for AEON it took them about 2 weeks to get back to me and confirm. I had also interviewed with ECC and I put them on hold until I heard from AEON. I accepted AEON.

Another idea, is that you could call NOVA and tell them that due to unforeseen circumstances your plans for attending the interview have changed and ask them if you could reschedule for another date. It won't be a problem as long as you warn them in advance. Schedule your interview with NOVA so that it winds up being after the AEON notification date. This way if AEON says no you still have a back up.

But, I'm pretty sure you got the job. If I were you, like another poster said, you can always call them to confirm. Explaining that they are your first choice and that if you are hired you will not go to your other interviews. (don't say which company)

Good luck!

I love New York! Lived there for a while and am originally from there. What area are you from?

Hi, if Aeon rejects you they`ll flat out tell you you`re not what they`re looking for (someone told me during my ECC interview that`s how they declined him a position). So yea it sounds like you`re in but why not just call em and clarify? The recruiters in Toronto always answered any of my queries w/ no implications or inferences. Cheers.

Worlddiva-

Somehow I had managed to completely not think of that idea- asking to reschedule the NOVA interview. I guess in all my excitement yesterday, basic logic had no time to prevail. So I entirely took your advice and rescheduled NOVA for a month from now- they were really good and easy about doing it, so that was no problem at all.

Always good to hear from a fellow NYer. I was born in Queens and grew up in western long island. NY's a great place, but I'm about ready to put it in the 'fun place to visit, but I'm sick of living here' category. What part of NY did you live in?

I'm glad to hear you were able to re-schedule. Good for you.

I was born in Manhattan Upper West Side, but in my teens I lived in Queens/Brooklyn right on the border- Eldert's lane. Woodhaven/Cypress Hill area. Just down from Jamaica Avenue. I also lived near Grand Avenue and Queens Blvd. for a while. It was ah-ight!

I agree, it's a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to go back and live there either. (ah...the sounds of the J train are still clear in my mind)

Hang on, so there's an actual place called "Cypress Hill"? Cool. I have been in love with New York for years but never been there yet because......of various reasons. I really hope it doesn't disappoint when I get there. I am fairly in love with all things American, actually.

Original Poster, was the person who called yuo from Aeon a Japanese, or a native English speaker ? In general, I'd say that Aeon is a big school and they mean what they say, but a Japanese speaker would tend to couch a rejection in very vague language. It's a classic East-West problem that the Japanese don't like to say "No", merely "We'll think about it" or "it's difficult". Many times Western salesmen have thought that a sales pitch went well, when in fact it bombed big-time.

If you talked to a Native English Speaker, though, I'd tend to believe you've got a job at Aeon. (I'd work there in a heartbeat, rather than Nova !) You can always call them back and ask if there's some paperwork that you should be doing, to get ready. If they say "Yeah, here's a list of things..." then you know you're hired, right ? If they give you the brush-off, then things are far less definite, aren't they.

I wouldn't reschedule the interview with Nova, if it's a question of rescheduling to a different location or different week/month. They tend to do these interviews every several MONTHS, and in cities that can be quite far apart. Your interview may only be schedule-able (is that a word ?) in a city several states away, and only in a certain one-week period.

Remember that once you're here, if you don't like your employer you can always CHANGE employers, as long as there's no gap in your employment. So if Nova sucks, for example, just look aruund for a different visa-sponsor on the sly.

By the way, I'm a "recovernig" New Yorker, too !
Born in J*****ey (don't make me say it !), lived in Rockland County, B'way and 72nd, B'way and 238th, Queens, and out on Lawn Guyland, in St. James / Stonybrook. HOw bout choo ?

Brit, I wouldn't be so in love with America, if I were you. It's really gone to seed... abusive employers, raving conservative maniacs getting airtime, and shrubbery, shrubbery, shrubbery. We desperately need the Knights who say "Ni !" to come in with a weed-whacker and clear out the bushes. This is doubly true for NY City, where the mayor has declared being poor to be a punishable crime. (Maybe it just seems that way... but it's definitely open season on the poor, there. Crappy place to live unless you're a stunningly rich stockbroker. The 'Burbs are nice, though.)

Hey All-

So I called AEON back and they calmed my nerves. I am actually hired (and totally excited about it), but just have to wait a few weeks for them to decide where exactly they want to send me. So I actually just cancelled my NOVA aptmnt. Why bother?

Once they tell me where I'm going, I'm sure I'll have a million new questions to post- so don't worry- the suspense will end soon enough. I know how completely interested in me everyone must be.

Thanks a lot for the help though Smile
