I'm studying for an MA in TESOL, and I have to register for summer classes. Which of the following courses do you think would be more helpful in a career in EFL? I have a choice, and I'm not sure which to pick. Also, keep in mind that I have to take two other linguistics courses (sociolinguistics, which I'm currently taking, and general linguistics).

Descriptive Linguistics
This course provides a survey of contemporary models used in linguistic analysis on all levels, practical applications of these models to a wide diversity of natural languages, and evaluation of the models with respect to their universal and cross-cultural application.
The Reflective Teacher as Instructional and Professional Leader
This course is designed to assist educators in examining their teaching through reflective practice. Participants will explore and apply multiple ways of reflecting and evaluating their teaching. Peer assistance, self-evaluation, student interviews, videotaping and teaching portfolios will be used to examine practice. Utilizing clinical opportunities, teachers will develop two entries for the Teacher Education Portfolio: one documenting their professional growth and development as an educational leader and the other for documenting their accomplishments in outreach to families and community. |
The first is included in the normal course work for the degree, but the second can be substituted as an elective. There's also a scheduling aspect to this choice, but I don't want to regret taking a useless class.

The fact that the second is a substitutible elective (and not part of the usual coursework) should tell you something straight away!
I myself wouldn't replace the first course with the second - the first sounds much more useful. You don't ultimately need to be told how to reflect if you are a reflective type (and there are books available on these kinds of topics, if you want or need to consult them), but you will surely appreciate every chance there is to get to grips with information and facts about languages. |
