Hi to all or anyone who is interested in helping out. I'm on my way to Vietnam and will be searching for a teaching job once I arrive. From travelling in South East Asia I've have heard many stories of the country -often polar impressions. I had my heart set on Hanoi as a cultural, historical city to live in but unsure if I can handle ten million two wheelers 21 hours a day. Bangkok had me wired.
So I'll have a look around and try and find a place that suits and has jobs. I was thinking maybe Hue, or Dalat - if these are university towns, maybe theres a demand.

Can anyone tell me about work in these smaller (but still big) cities?
Any reputable companies willing to hire someone with a Bach Arts, some teaching experience, but no Celta or Tefl course?

Thanks for any help and I look forward to the 12 hour karoke bus ride across Laos and into Vietnam.

The question comes up often. We'd all like to find that sweet gig in Da Lat, Nha Trang or Phan Thiet, but realistically you are more likely to find things in Da Nang, Vung Tau or Hai Phong.

Having been to each city with the exeption of Hai Phong, I'd say that Vung Tau is the place to go. There are a few schools there including www.ilavietnam.com which is a solid choice, IMHO.

I work in Danang, which isn't a bad town though it be short on excitement. Jobs come and go - you kind of have to show up when someone else is leaving and just take their slot. There are a few schools in town and more than a few people here end up working part-time at more than one of them to make ends meet.

There is also a branch of SITC, I think, in nearby Hoi An. But given the popularity of that frankly overrated tourist circus of a town I'd say the odds are slim of beating anyone to a job there. I also met a girl who works in Hue, which has a bit more going on than Danang, but I don't know what the job market is there. Seems to me that everything outside of HCMC and Hanoi is pretty underdeveloped. Good luck.

Cheers for the responses. I checked out the Uni at Hue and it didn't seem too encouraging. Perhaps a really interesting place to work, but positions were full and pay was next to nothing.
Otherwise it seems IT companies that are expanding and training so rapidly are taking on teachers here and there.

Hanoi might be the way to go.
