As the amendment does not extend the date on your FM3 it is a total waste of money getting it.

Ilegal? Just do it.

The trouble is that each office seems to vary on how it would actually handle the situation. I would talk to other foreigners with an FM3 who have had to deal with that particular office and see what they have to say.

I know that my local office would throw a hissy-fit and hit me with a large fine if I were caught working at a school not on my FM3.

Hi, the first thing that you have to do is is ask your current employer what your RFC#is. This is like your social security number. It will be the first two letters of your last name then the first letter of your first name and the first vowel of your first name followed by the year of your birth month and then day.
Example > Stephanie Johnston born June 3rd 1971 = JOSE710603xxx the xxx indicateds the number the government gives you to make your number individual. This also indicates that your employer has done their work and registered you with Hacienda. Should your employer not be able to give you your RFC# that is another situation in entirely. But, then go to Hacienda, which is the taxation office and get an RFC# to work independantly. You will be sent to a papeleria to purchase some forms. Sorry I dont remember the numbers. They will also ask you at Hacienda what type of tax account you want. Honorarios or honorarios a salarios asimilados. Honorarios indicates that you will have to present the place you are working for with an official receipt with your RFC# and they will then pay you. It is your responsibility to pay the tax. You also have to file a tax return annually by the end of April. Hacienda will do all the work for you at no charge. Honorarios a salarios asimilados is when the place you work pays you by cheque or direct depost or how ever and they submit the tax for you. It is possible to have both. When you have filled out the forms and they give you your number you go to Immigration with your paperwork and they will put in your FM3 Amplication de actividad ....... Maestra/o de ingles Independiente, en esta ciudad. You have to pay to have this done. It cost the same as renewing your FM3 but it is a one time cost. Also if you change schools in the same city you do not have to pay to change your sponsor which is also the same price as renewing your FM3. Independant status also gives you a little more security. If you are sponsored by a school and they are not exactly ethical and decide to terminate your employment, by law they have to let immigration know within 3 working days that you are no longer working there. Legally you are then given 30 days to find new employment. Should you not have found employment you will be in the country illegally, with independant status no.
Hope this helps.

In the state of Morelos each individual goes to Hacienda to do the RFC process. Employers cannot do it for you.

Actually if for some reason your stop working for your current employer, whether it be your decision or that of your employer, you usually have up to 30 days to inform you local immigration office. After informing them of this change they give you a plazo of 30 days to find a new job. However if for some reason you have been unsuccessfull in finding a new job and go to the immigration office before your 30 days are up and explain the situation they can and do extend it to give you more time.

If you go to the office after the 30days to inform them of a change in your employer they will still change the details on your fm-3 but the will also hit you with a pretty big fine for not having informed them within the 30 days.
