Hi guys,
I'm going to Thailand on the 18th of April and will be starting work for Fun Language immediately in Bangkok. I'll be earning 30k baht after probation and am after a basic apt.
Trouble is i'm leaving a little debt behind me and will need to be paying 50-60 a month to slowly get rid of it. Thats like wiping out 5k baht. So i'm thinking of supplementing my income with some private tuituon. I'm interested in your views of how easy it is to teach externally 1:1 and whether me going with debt is a good idea. I'm not a heavy drinker or particular party animal, 90% of the time when I go out I drink coke. Nor am i adverse to living frugally for the first few months. So basically is it a big deal, and how easy will it be to find work as a private tutor in Bangkok.
Thanks, and i'll see you all soon! (hopefully)

Blunder,
It should be fairly easy to find privates once you're in Thailand. I supplemented my income with 4 hours of privates a week which added another 11,200 baht to my monthly salary. I found my private students through Fun Language.
However, without extra cash you might run into trouble since you're planning to send home 5,000 a month. Living on 25,000 is not very pleasant... |

Hey... I'm not a thieve...
I was approached by parents who thought their children needed some additional English lessons. One of my students was 5 years old and the other one just had turned three. A three year old with his own English teacher...
Many (if not all) language schools prohibit their employees to teach private lessons with their customers. Fun Language is not a language school in the traditional sense. They have contracts with private schools, where they send their teachers. Plenty of rich kids means plenty of potential privates. |

No you're not a thief!
I'm still confused did you teach them privately for FL? Or privately yourself? Generally I'd use privater tuition to mean there's no language school/agent involved?
Most language schools have contracts with private etc. schools, very common practice here! |

Oops, silly me. I can't even distinguish verb forms from nouns. And I thought I'm capable of teaching English...
What I meant is that I found my privates while teaching at FL, not through their administration. FL was not involved in it in any way. |
