A lot of good advice here, as I'm preparing for my first teaching assignment. While quite interested in Japan, I've learned firsthand that it's very tough to land a job if one isn't in Japan.

I selected Thailand and (realistically) not for the money. Thai and Buddhist culture are close to my heart, and have met many great Thai people (including a Thai girlfriend for one year) in Europe and N. America. Having a somewhat basic knowledge of Thai language, it seems a wise choice.

When I leave Thailand for Japan, it's not expected that teaching in Thailand will raise eyebrows in the ELT world. I'm doing this for the experience...

Having taught in korea for nearly 5 years I have heard plently of horror stories and i do believe they are true. but if you play your cards right and take your time and ask your questions, there is no reason for you not to be able to find a good job where they treat you well and with respect.

i have worked at 4 different places (including 1 camp) and have always been treated really well and have always received my pay on time and in full. I hope i can be one positive voice from korea.

you can save a LOT of money here, and even a little without trying. i by no mean try to put away any money and i always seem to have a lot left over at the end of the month. i, too, came here with uni loans. i have consolidated and you should take the advice of nellychess if you can. loan payments of 200CAD will not be an issue here. ask your friend living in daejeon (also where i am living) as many questions as possible, if you havent already. daejeon is a great city for your situation. cost of living is lower than seoul.
