|
|
Hi
In the TESOL course I am currently undertaking, we have been given a choice of choosing two of the following three electives/ specialisations: teaching business English/ TOEIC, teaching IELTS (English for University Entrance) and teaching EAP (English for academic purposes). I was wondering if anyone had any advice/ opinions on which of these would be most useful for getting TEFL positions in Asia at the moment? Do any of them have the edge? I've heard that expertise in IELTS preparation is sought after, but I'm not quite sure how this compares to the value of EAP. I am looking to teach in either China, northern Thailand or rural Japan and have a degree (BSc).
Thanks for your help!

TOEIC is always popular in Japan. Japanese students take the TOEIC more than any other nationality. |

It seems a bit odd that you can do the TOEIC or IELTS, but not the TOEFL. In Asia, I think the TOEFL and TOEIC are more useful than IELTS.
If I had to choose, I'd do the TOEIC because of its popularity in Asia and the EAP module because, well, just because I like teaching academic English (my current job is EAP-ish).

If the IELTS course actually enables you to become an IELTS examiner you can make good money that way. Computers mark TOEFL and TOIEC tests so that's some indication of.... well draw your own conclusions. |

Celeste, small correction: Japan has the highest number of test-takers for TOEIC of all countries that offer the exam (about 700,000). Only about a fifth of those are actuallystudying TOEIC in school. A large majority are actually company employees who are required to take TOEIC within their companies for promotion, being hired into companies as freshmen etc. About 120,000 of the TOEIC test takers in Japan every year are university level and younger.
The actual average test scores of Japanese students ranks near the bottom, however. |
