I am interested in teaching English in Latin America and am going to have my TESOL certification in mid-July. I was wondering how to go about getting a job, what is a good time period to start looking/applying, and if many of the jobs in Latin America offer any medical benefits. Any information would be really helpful.
Thanks
M

Latin America is BIG, and most of your questions will be more easily answered country by country.

So here's Ecuador:

Practically anytime can be a good time, but summer months are definitely the deadest.(June, July, August) If you come with enough money to support yourself in the beginning, (it often takes 1-3 months to get your schedule up to full) and look around diligently, your would be likely to manage it at any time of year. Unless you're REALLY unemployable or unpresentable.

But if you want to stay long term, visas can be a pain in the !"# here, so it's often worth applying to see if you can get a job, and visa, beforehand. This would also reduce your setup costs considerably.

My school offers subsidised health insurance to full time, one year contract teachers. It's a relatively good travel insurance policy, but there is a pre-existing condition exclusion, so if there's a particular condition you are thinking you need covered, it probably wouldn't be. It's fine for accidents and emergencies, though.

Good Luck,

Justin
