When I started teaching here, I found ethnic Chinese teenagers hard-going. Eventually I realised there were two main reasons:

1) They're teenagers and I'm a boring old fart. I would have the same difficulties with Western teenagers. In fact, I remember a hellish summer school in Britain with Italian teenagers, who wanted to do nothing but smoke and snog.

2) Their schools and ambitious parents give them loads to do, apart from studying English. They have tuition, Mandarin lessons, church-based activities, sport... If you ask them to describe their week, you will see why they spend the weekends sleeping.

Their lightly-held opinions (homophobia, racism, etc.) are not so different from those of my contemporaries, when I was a teenager. Admitedly that was back in the Punic Wars.

If you want to teach poor children English, you could volunteer for Kampung Kids in Jakarta:

Bedevilled has just been made DoS of the company where she works.

Who resurrected this post? Maybe the person who didn't get the job? (For very good reasons).........

KIA: Thank you for your personal email with the 'embedded virus'! Fortunately I have very good virus protection on this computer. I presume you picked up the email address from the job advert posted on Dave's. What's wrong? Did we turn you down for the job? Didn't you like something I said? etc. etc. Very strange behaviour in any case!! By the way, I have now blocked your address, so don't bother trying to send it again.
