I am curious if HK schools have spoken English classes like most mainland schools? And if so, are they generally open to young foreign teachers? It seems like all mainland schools are dying to get their hands on foreign teachers so long as they have a degree and are a native speaker. But is this the case in HK as well?
I am considering locating in HK as I really love the city. I currently live in SZ and am soon to complete my first year of Oral English teaching. I suspect that it may be quite hard to find a job as most of the teachers in HK are probably highly qualified.
Thanks for your help. |

Things are really quite very different from the Mainland, as I'm sure you will have seen on your frequent visits here. The schools are no exception. You will need at least a BA, MA, CELTA (or equivalent) - preferably a PGCE, too - and you will need vastly more experience than one year in order to attract and secure sponsorship. |

I am not sure why Zero thinks that an MA is neeeded for work in HK schools. The immigration department seem to like the idea of a first degree for sponsorship, but I know of people without one who have been sponsored, althougth not in the education field. There are many many schools who employ teachers for oral classes. The big problem for people trying to get work in HK is that there are still many people here from before the handover and before the change in immigration rules that made a dependant of a working visa holder ineligable for automatic right to work. A lot of the work for oral teachers comes via agencies, whom the schools then hire through with set oral courses. You could try to contact some of the agencies and see what your sponsorship chances are.
I have no real experience of working here without a visa..so cannot comment on that situation. |
