Mexico probably, though it depends on if we are talking about language schools or university work.

Language schools? Mexico City could net you up to $1200 us per month, though not if you are inexperienced. Up to $1000 us per month in other towns.

Uni position or upscale private primary/secondary school probably tops at $2000 usd, again, with experience and qualifications.

I would also say Mexico - but then the same locations that pay well also have higher living costs to match.

You can net $500-$900 in language schools, 900-1500 in exclusive private schools, and maybe as much as 2000 in the top universities. But the top jobs are much sought after and the competition is stiff. Normal would be in the $500-$800 range, which isn't too much in one of south america�s most expensive economies.

there are US binational associations throughout LatAm that occassionally have jobs. a friend worked at the one in Recife for almost $20,000/year. not much here but a lot for Brazil, esp the north.

i was semi-offered a job in barranquilla, COL at a university for i think $35,000/year but it fell apart in the end, so i can't verify that the salary is real. it seemed credible enough, and the contact was through the DOS at my IEP who was friends with the DOS at the univ in barranquilla.

i can't really imagine finding anything higher than that.

i second guy's and tim's comments on mexico. if you have an MA, ITESM is close to 20,000 when you factor in the year end bonus. it still depends on timing, though, as many campuses are tight right now.

there's also www.sit.edu/elf, which pays $17,000 plus benefits for a handful of positions in LA, though you need an MA. deadline in 5 weeks so hurry up if you're interested.

one alternative i'm thinking about is teaching on the internet and just living in latin america. i just need a reliable high speed connection (alreaedy have the job), my location is unimportant to the company and i'm going to be paid in US$. come to think of it, that could be a detriment right now! anyway, it's an alternative that you might consider if you want to live in LA but don't mind teaching people from all over.

oh, i should add that most of the jobs i mentioned prefer or require an MA.

Uh, go back to that thread on General Discussion. That was in 2003. With all the political scandals and dirty deeds the most current shows that Mexico is no longer among the happiest/friendliest countries.
