[quote="molly farquharson"]I saw my lawyer today and specifically asked him about the contract issue. he said the contract can be written in any language and it is valid.

What a coincidence. The very day we are talking about ''contracts'' you are visiting your lawyer. What luck that it is valid in any language in the whole wide world. A poll to see who believes the esteemed lawyer?

surely part of the problem is the way most teachers put up with such appalling conditions without a fight. Of course nobody with a tourist visa can sign an authentic contract. But how often does anyone complain about this?

A few reasons for this:

So many teachers are young and inexperienced.

Many land in Ist with little in the way of savings and hence have no security.

You can be sacked and there is nothing you can do.

Schools threaten teachers with withholding bonuses, flight money etc.

If you are living in school accomodation not only would you be jobless you would be homeless.

Threats like ''the word goes out'' and ''you will not stay in Istanbul.'' Myths like ''we will report you to the police'' frighten many.

For the more experienced teachers there is often an attitude that it is the same everywhere so there is nothing you can do. So many people are driven out of EFl by the above. The turnover rate is frightening.

Unlocked, but only as long as it stays on topic and free of personal attacks and petty bickering.

i dont.

btw...if a contract is one sided it is not a real contract acoording to Turkish law system...
i think most of you have problems with hourly payment system...if u re working for a language school you must get used to it because it is the system it has to be....language schools do not offer years months of terms to their students, just hours....doesnt matter how many months it takes for an elementary level it is 120 hours in ET and students pay this money...if it snows and the lessons are cancelled students dont pay it so you are not going to be paid...but kolejs, universities charge one term or one year so students pay the money whether it snows or not so you are paid too.....easy

Alot of my friends who had snow days now find that their summer holiday now starts later. Days which were missed due to snow have been added on to end of term.

MOD EDIT

No. Have a look at almost all the jobs in language schools worldwide and only a few of the poorest schools don`t pay a monthly salary. As for the excuse you made about the poor old school getting paid for hours not months-crap-that`s part of the risk a businessman takes. Hotel owners only get paid by the night but they still have to pay their staff a monthly salary.
