Hi all,
here's the deal. I'm a 25 year-old Irish teacher who's been working in Dalian freelance for the last six months. My (chinese) wife, who I met and married in Ireland by the way, is expecting our first child in a couple of weeks and I want to get work sorted out before everything goes insane. I'm going to stay freelance for the summer, ride the post-SARS wave if you like. However, I need some stability afterwards and so want to sign a year's contract. I've got the basic offer from AES and it seems ok, I can still do some freelance work around it to bump up the wages. As I said, I've been here a while, have a good head on my shoulders and can tell the good comments I've read from the whiners who've no idea. What I really want to ask is, does anyone know of a better deal? Obviously most people will want to keep them to themselves, you're not that dumb! But any info that may help in barganing etc. would be appreciated.

Chris

p.s. The recipe for a Mapel Daiquiri is two parts Mapel Syrup, two parts the best white or golden rum you can find (Bacardi and Malibu work fine if you can't get better), ice, in a blender 'til it's smooth, little bit of syrup and dark rum over the top. I lived in Vancouver for six months Mr. Green

I do not know the pay scale at AES, but I have seen several offers of jobs requiring me to work up to 24 periods (at 30 minutes) in a kindergarten, at 8000 a month.
I also have an offer from a private school paying 7000 for 25 weekly periods,l teaching students and adults.
AES is good in that it treats its staff nicely and offers job stability, a rare commodity in this line of business in China!

Thanks Roger, it's much easier to stare down a principal who's trying to pull a fast one if you (and they) know for a fact that SOMEONE'S willing to pay the rates you're asking for.

Yes MT there is, it's pretty good, give it a try. That's the great thing about a daiquiri; it's just rum, sugar and fruit or flavouring!
Take the Banana(nananana) Daiquiri a la Terry Pratchett "a glass of rum with a banana in it. Take out the banana and throw it away (or eat it). Then drink the rum." Wunnerful.

cimarch,

LOTS of people will pay the rates you are asking for. English teachers are a seller's market here right now. You have the luxury of shopping carefully...use it.

I used to love good rum but I haven't had much of it here in China. I mostly see white Bacardi and I'm more a dark Myers man.
Lately I am exploring the apparently endless possibilities promised by good tequila. Very Happy
