A fairly typical Argentine joke:

Un chico hablando con un amigo.
- "He salido con esta chica varias veces. Le he llevado los libros, la he llevado al cine, la he invitado a tomar cerveza... Cres que debo besarla".
- "No pibe", dice el amigo "Ya has hecho bastante por esa chica".

Translates as:

one friend to another:
-I've been out with a girl a few times now. I carried her books, took her to the cinema, took her out drinking...Do you think i should kiss her now?
-No way, mate. You've already done too much for this girl.

Machismo is a way of life here, most probably the worst in Latin America.

I would say in my personal experience that machismo
is encouraged by the women, by mothers and girlfriends,
not wives intrestingly enough as I'm sure a few years
of washing her macho husbands socks it all wears a bit thin.

But I have seen teenage cousins who are Peruvian and are
all pimples and hair gel strut around while their cooing mum
goes 'oooh my little macho'

The again it is not all for show, I do remember my cousins
Marcello and Jose Luis, all 5ft 6ins of them in their first weeks
in a Mersyside council estate being too popular with the ladies and
incurring the wrath of the local older youth (at the time my cousins
were 15 and 17 respectively) when outnumbered and challenged
my cousins told them to bring it on. The thugs didn't expect this so
my cousins ran at them and they ran off...

I think Argentina is more Italian where the men are more
into piropos and chatting up strange women than proving how
hard they are (though it is there, it is probably not as bad
as say Mexico or even Peru or Bolivia)
