I guess each person's experiences are unique. I never really had much of a problem with other teachers, except this one Brit guy. Laughing

My problems with roommies were when the landlord started renting out to university students, and some rich Mexican guy who was waiting to get his house built.

Most of the problems had to do with shared utilities and phone. It seemed that the Mexicans figured that since we were norteamericanos we must be rich, therefore we wouldn't mind if they ran up the phone bill and left us to pay for it. Rolling Eyes

The next place I worked at didn't have that problem but there were still disputes because of personality conflicts.

I would much rather live on my own now.

Thanks for the El Universal classified ads website; it gave me a good idea of how much rents are in neighborhoods where I would consider living in the D.F. Since I only need a one-bedroom apartment, it looks as though I will be able to afford to live in a pleasant part of the city on the salary I expect to be making from business classes and private students. Now I have to see if a friend who is a long-term resident of Mexico (over 30 years) will agree to be my fiador!

Hey MO,

I'm still trying to figure out what to do about this gig in Mexico City, and one of my problems is that I don't know where the various barrios are in DF. I saw a couple of one bedroomers in Coyocan, but I think that's a little far to travel each day, isn't it?

Does anyone know where I can find a map that shows all of the different neighborhoods? My main experience of DF is around the Zocalo (it is the centre of the universe, after all Wink

) and a little bit of the Zona Rosa.

Or, we could share a place, you and I, MO!

To give you an idea of getting around on the Metro: You can go from the Hidalgo station in the Centro Hist�rico to the Coyoacan stop (in front of the shopping center and 3 blocks from Cineteca) in 20 minutes.

Ladies, would you walk home from the Coyoacan metro at say 10pm alone?

Thanks for this, I've never had any problems with security in Mexico City, but having only visited it, I haven't lived there under my normal circumstances. For example, the other night I went out for a few drinks with my students and sauntered home at about 11pm. I wouldn't want to have to stop doing those things out of concern for my personal safety.

This may not be typical as it happened the one and only time I've ever been to coyoacan but my cousin and I were treated to a very interesting view when a taxi driver stopped in the middle of the road to show us that he was....... let's say, enjoying himself! Not a pleasant sight and that was in the middle of the day, just round the corner from Frida Kahlo's house - wouldn't have found it very amusing if it was night time and I was on my own

Lozwich--Depends on how far you have to walk. I have walked from the Cineteca to the Metro at that hour by myself--but it's only 3 blocks.

Carde - This type of enjoyment seems to be quite common here in Mexico. I have never experienced it personally, but all of the gringas I know have had men follow them in cars, taxis, vans, etc. while they play with themselves. I prefer to not make eye contact (or eye-to-other-body-part contact) with people in cars, so maybe its why I haven�t seen any.

Flashers are also fairly prevalent. Years ago I was walking home from the market with my roommate. A man flashed us and we just ignored him, but when a Mexican woman walked by he quickly tried to cover himself up. She, unlike us, chose not to ignore him but beat him with her bag while damning him to hell. Her reaction may explain why men only flash foreign women.
