HCT Teachers will )and I am sure that means ZU also)...he says with a smile, counting his chickens before they have hatched. 15% Being just of the plane it is a great thing.
Mind you one of my colleagues is from New Zealand and is down something like 45% in real New Zealand dollars since his first year here (I can't remember if that is WITH increments or not.) |

Hey Gordon... this is the Gulf. All is speculation and rumor until one has something in writing in one's hand from the government - and then only believed when it finally shows up in your checking account by direct deposit by the employer.
You were expecting like a website or something?
So, Turtle... has it progressed beyond rumor yet?

Well you know the answer to that VS. This is the Gulf.
The short answer is yes. We will be getting a 15% increase starting the 1st of May. (It will be on our pay at the end of May.) This came from the media, and more importantly the Vice Chancellor. (Nationals will be getting a 25% hike.)
BUT...I will say we have it when I see it in my account the 1st of June. |

Does anyone know what the monthly salary range would be for a new HCT faculty member with an MA in TESOL, a CELTA and and 7 years overseas teaching experience? |

I think you are being a bit premature... I doubt if HCT could answer that question yet for sure.

Can't answer it but I can tell you one thing I have heard. (which means it could just as likely be untrue as to be true.) The years of experience only count if you were teaching adults.
So for instance. 7 Years kids in Korea. 2 years at Uni. You would only get the bump for 2 years teaching experience. (Which in retrospect I guess doesn't have much to do with what you asked) Fortunately for my salary my 7 years was teaching adults that acted like children, with only one year of teaching children that acted like adults. |

Thanks to those who have responded.
Perhaps someone can tell me what the current base salary is for a new HCT faculty member.
I've heard 13,000 Dirhams per month ... does this sound right?

The base salary depends on experience. I think teachers that also have industry experience (or more than eleven years' teaching experience) will come in over 13,000 dirhams. Right now anyone under ten year's experience will probably come in under 12,000. |

So as I say, "counting those chickens before they were hatched".
The raise was confirmed by the VC. Guess who gave his resignation today? That's right. We have a new VC.
Doesn't look as promising for the raise, but again, I will put on my rose colored glasses and wait patiently for my raise in May.
Either way I won't be going anywhere. Being a newbie I knew the salary when I signed on and I like my job, but it will be interesting to see if the oldtimers will grin and bear it or whether there will be higher than usual turn over if the raise doesn't come through. |

At the HCT campus where I work, the director has informed supervisors that the raise WILL NOT be forthcoming. |

All we can do is wait and see, my friend.
I wouldn't count it out quite yet. |

What a soap opera this is getting to be!! I wonder what is going on. The silly part of it is that the UAE (like the rest of the oil soaked Gulf - excluding Bahrain and Oman) is DROWNING in oil revenue. It is not costing that much more to get the stuff out of the ground as it was a few short years back when it was $10 a barrel, and it has been sitting at $45-60 for the last couple of years. Dubai is booming...
As usual teachers are the last to feel the benefit. Turtlepi, you may be too much of an optimist for the Gulf. It is always better to have low expectations and avoid disappointments.

Yeah maybe I am just a little too much of an optimist but to be quite honest I hope it never wears off. People are just far too cynical. (Especially in the Gulf)
As for the raise I wish we could post all of the rumours that are flying around because it IS a great soap opera, but perhaps that wouldn't be prudent. (being such a small community and all) |
