Hey

I'm a 23 year old guy keen to teach in Poland. I am a Dutch national but I've grown up in SA.

Are there any other South Africans over there?

I have a PGCE and an Honours in English Lit.

How would I go about getting work?

Hey,

I did meet a couple of South Africaners working for International House in Katowice a few years back. SA is considered a native English speaking country from what I understand. Getting the CELTA is probably the easiest way to get in though...

I had a teacher coming from South Africa back in my times at a university. I can see no reasons why there shouldn't be some South Africans teaching in Poland now, but I haven't heard of any. I think you don't need to worry about your background too much. Start applying, there have been some ads on eslcafe recently. You'll find a job, either at public universities, or for private training centres.

Yes you will find a job with the qualifications you have. As a qualified teacher you won't need a CELTA.

One word of caution for you: most of the non-white teachers I've met in Poland commented on how bad the racist is here. The smaller the town the worst the problems.

Thanks guys. I will keep applying. I have been rejected a few times, though - usually the CELTA line.

Sorry to hear about the racism - but I am in fact Caucasian/white - don't think it will bother me - SA has its share of racism - I think its pretty much a universal problem.

So, I have now done the CELTA course and am actually at the interview stage for September 2005. Its all happened rather quickly.

So, can anyone advise me about schools in Katowice, Gdansk and Bydgoszc?

Its going to be such a trip for me to be in an ex-Communist country, I think all of the cities are going to be pretty cool. I feel at a weird crossroads as SA seems to be headed toward communism.

Any South Africans in Poland now? It would be cool to have a beer and some biltong if there are any....
