Hi there,
Does anyone have experience in writing for expat magazines in China? I have been approached by a local magazine in Guangzhou and will meet with them next week. Any ideas on salary expectations? It won't be writing a great deal, but having never done this I have no idea as to a pay structure.
Guessing its paid per word........so, please, if anyone has any info on this, please drop me a line.
Cheers.
PS. How about photography for similiar magazines. Any idea on pay there too. |

Writers usually don't get paid much.
Editors earn the money.
You could calculate the time you spend writing and researchin and multiply it by your hourly wage. |

I would say by-the-word payment is most likely. Last year I did some writing for a textbook in Taiwan. Pay was 20 cents per word (high) but they bought all rights (sucky).
If you look around the internet, most ezines will pay no more than $25 per article, and $10 per photo if applicable.
Print mags pay more, sometimes around $200-$400 per feature article with photos (maybe 1-3,000 words).
It really depends what you're going to be writing, what rights they are purchasing, whether the pieces are dependent on photos, and who the target market is. Obviously highly-priced mags will pay more.
Calculating a reasonable figure by the hour is a good idea IF they let you choose a payment scheme - but that seems unlikely. JMHO.
Hope that helps some. If not, PM me and I might be able to help a bit more.
Cheers, |
