Hello everyone! I've been reading the forums on this website and they are really quite helpful.

I'm thinking of applying for jobs in either Japan or China, but I foresee difficulties since I am Chinese-American. I was wondering how other Asian-Americans dealt with the issue with recruiters. For instance, how do you mention it in your cover letter (assuming that you aren't attaching a photo as well)? Is it better to let the recruiter bring the issue up first?

Thanks!

I'm not an Asian American, just a vanilla Caucasian American, but my advice would be to not use the term Chinese American at all. With or without a picture, it will be potentially confusing to a reviewer who may not even know what that term means.

You are American. Period.

Most of Asia is growing up - and coming to realize (finally!) that not ALL Americans - or Canadians for that matter - have blonde hair and blue eyes.

I agree with Glenski - if you start with the hyphenations - they'll not be sure where you come from or even if you are a native speaker.

Asian resumes/CVs require a photo anyway.

Only the most mercenary of employers will care - and really - you don't want to work for those folks anyway.

Maybe as a boring white guy I don't understand, but I'm at a loss here. Why would you want to mention this at all?
If race is an issue for the employer, let him or her bring it up.

I agree. Don't create confusion. Let them be the ones who are race obsessed, not you. I wouldn't worry about it too much, as I don't think it will be a problem for you finding work. You might be discriminated against and they might prefer other candidates over you, but you will eventually land work in your chosen destination whether it be China or Japan... as native speakers are at a premium.
