Gooberdeluxe reporting. I arrived in Tai Chung two days ago. I am staying near the RR station. I hear of all these teaching establishments yet I don't see hardly any. Where are they?? I checked Tealit for a couple of schools and they seemed rather non-chalant about hiring. A yawn, send-your-resume answer. I guess it is a start.
If anyone has suggestions, let me know.
This place is a trip. First time here. This scooter business is mad. Sixty miles an hour seemingly through red lights! It is an unnerving feeling as you cross the street and the horde begins approaching. It is dodge ball with all of them being the ball and me being in the circle.
That's all.
P.s. Where are the betelnut girls? |

The English teaching market in Taichung is one of the most heavily saturated and unprofessional on the island.
Apparently there are several large Universities there that are very good at getting Mandarin language students ARC's as students ( something rather unusual on Taiwan). The local police also turn a blind eye to student teachers so it seems to be a Mecca of part time student teachers and wayward travelers looking to make a little money.
Good luck and please be careful as Taichung is regarded by many as the organized crime capital of Taiwan and possibly East Asia.

I thought that you said that Taidong was the one to watch out for.
Or was it Xinzhu.
No wait a minute it was Jiayi wasn't it? The gangster capital of the world as I recall.
The fact of the matter is that Taichung isn't as bad as Aristotle would like it to be.
Are there some unsavoury characters there? Most certainly.
Are there more there than anywhere else in Taiwan? Unlikely.
Are there unsavory characters in other parts of Taiwan? Most certainly.
Are these gangsters likely to have an effect upon your life in Taiwan? Unlikely.
To the OP, why not check out the List of Schools linked to in my signature below. You can search for schools in the Taichung area and then contact those schools directly. Many of them may not be looking for teachers at the moment, but you never know, you might get lucky.
Beetle Nut girls? They are often found on the approaches to freeways and other major roads where truckers pass. |

Which side of the railway station? Because not far from the street with the small hotels is a street with a number of bushibans and the YMCA(I mention this because they employ English teachers). TLI is not far from the railway station either. Even if you don't want to enrol in Chinese lessons they have a notice board....so subbing work could be a place to start. Hit the pubs with the boards..Most are near Sogo...you don't have to buy anything to look at the boards. |

For the record. There have been few if any instances of foreign teachers in Taichung running into serious trouble outside of the usual. Of the few occurrences that have come to light, the local Foreign Affairs Police in Taichung seem to have done something about it (some would call that unusual outside of Taipei). The same can not be said for the regular police.
The reason for this is the fact that obtaining a student ARC in Taichung is fairly straight forward, thus giving the teachers a university sponsor with quite a bit of quanxi/guanshi/guanxi .
Good luck.

So then why did you post this earlier up the thread?
