I don't know the prices for a Discman but I gather they are pricey here. I've only rarely seen them and I've had several Chinese friends ask me to order them one from the States. This might be a good one to bring from home.
Most people here walk around plugged into MPG players...downloaded music.

Just thought id say its MP3 player that u download and listen to. MPG is a video file format Very Happy (i THINK mpg is also a type of gun...hmmm...or is it RPG?)

and to ms black girl - a VCD is a VIDEO CD - a cd which the chinese pirate films onto. a DVD is usually interactive and has menus and stuff - a vcd is basically a video file (usually a .DAT file) burnt on to a CD.

Enough from me - sorry:P

you should be careful when buying vcd's in china - usually it will be a new release copied straight from the CINEMA! i.e a bloke/or blokette (man/woman) would go into the cinema with a camcorder and film the screen. So the quality will be crappy, the sound shy-tty and u will get ppl bobbin the heads up and down to go to the toilet - AND ppls mobiles going off.Smile

MBW,

VCD is exactly what it stands for- Video Compact Disc. It's the same format as other CDs and one nice thing about them is that they'll play on your laptop even if it doesn't have a DVD drive.

As Stevey pointed out the quality of DVDs can be a big problem. But it's not accurate to say they are necessarily bootleg...you CAN buy legit VCDs. However, about 99% of all VCDs sold here ARE bootleg...and so are about 99% of all DVDs.

You can buy a movie for 50 RMB in a department store...or the same movie with usually great quality across the street from your apartment for 7 RMB. Which will you buy?

DVD is infinitely superior in quality to VCD, and new titles in VCD format are becoming scarcer...at least around here. Don't bother with a VCD player. You should most definitely put a DVD player on your shopping list as soon as you get here. You can't be a tourist every day. You'll have a lot fewer entertainment options here, especially options that don't damage your liver. A DVD player is a godsend.

To Miss Black girl
A VCD are VCR movies burned on a disk. As the posters have said here, the quality is not good and after 10 viewings they lose quality fast! I would highly recommend DVDS they are a better quality and last longer and have interactive menus of course depending on the movie.

A VCR is a video cassette recorder- obsolete technology here, though there are lots of unused ones around the place. Still the prefered technology for getting your fave TV shows, family videos from home though. We brought ours with us with about 20 tapes of our infant son's favorite shows.
