|
|
I'll be 50 this year. I have a B.A. and an M.A. in Applied Linguistics. I also have a TEFL certificate. I have been in Korea since 2000 and have taught English at the college and university level. At the moment I am teaching in the public elementary school system.
Realisitically, what are my chances of obtaining a position in HK? Any chance of being hired sight unseen, or is it necessary to interview in person?
Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Realistically, your chances of securing employment would be good. However, few - if any - employers will or can take on prospective employees without having seen them in the flesh first. |

Hi
What kind of jobs could one get with an MA in TESOL or Applied Linguistics in HK? The university jobs look few and far between. |

You're right University jobs are hard to come by, at least I hardly see any advertised. Maybe Zero will answer. He works at a Uni. |

Thanks for your response Zero. Any suggestions on where I might concentrate my search efforts?

If I were you I would concentrate my search on the seven universities in HK. I think most - if not all - have both language centres and growing adult education departments. You would certainly be in with a very good chance of securing work in either. You would most likely have to be here, though, as I stated above. That way you would be vastly more likely to attract an interview. The best time to look is basically from now, especially June, July, and increasingly, (often late) August. I would recommend the education section of the SCMP, especially the actual paper edition.
It is certainly true that these posts can often be few and far between, though, and competition can sometimes be quite stiff. At other, rarer, times, however, you can sometimes see all the universities advertise for 4 or 5 instructors each, often for more than one department.
Here are the relevant pages for the universities in HK:
http://www.polyu.edu.hk/hro/job.htm
http://perntc.per.cuhk.edu.hk/personnel/
http://www.hkbu.edu.hk/~pers/job/advert.html
https://www.ab.ust.hk/po/vac.html
https://extranet.hku.hk/apptunit/
http://www.ln.edu.hk/info/about/employment/index.shtml
http://www.cityu.edu.hk/cityu/job/index.htm
You might also want to look into IVY and VTC posts, some of them can be quite lucrative. Hard work from what I hear, but then most work in HK is! |
