Sorry about my geography , but is Baku in Russia. Do you have access to what they generally offer to their employees? perhaps a website, perhaps a work colleague has some letter of what they generally offer in their terms. Did they pay you entirely legal? Did you pay your taxes. Your employer has more responsibility than you to do things properly.
I dont think I would accept any work offer without at least a letter stating what is being offered to me.
Another point , should be common sense. If you have been offered employment in another country, you should make sure you get a contract before you leave your original country |

All pay was cash in hand. The 'legal' system in Azerbaijan is not up to Western standards. No taxes were paid. The company transferres funds from Baku to London by hand: no paper trail.
I agree the company (with a branch in London) has a responsibility to do things properly. I post this as a warning to others to get a signed contract before rushing overseas. I accept I did not do this but believed promises. |

I know that in Russia, the employer has more responsibility and more to lose if a complaint is made to the right employment authorities.
A branch in London ?? Do you think they might have then responsibilitie to UK law, again check up government employment services.
Its worth a try to complain to your employer, and if you dont receive a certain sum of money, you will complain to the employment authorities of both countries.
As I said its worth giving it a try, you may not have sufficient documents, but the authorities may take your word on it. And no contract or at least some form of agreement, that is their responsibility. I feel sure they will be recognised as being wrong legally |

Yeah right. I am sure they would take it seriously. BTW Baku is not in Russia.

To take a civil suit against an employer is expensive and UK law has no juristiction outside the UK. How many times does it have to be said that tefl contracts are usually not legal.

Sheer fantasy.

Since when do govt depatments and courts ''take your word.''

I see you already have been more specific, I have never seen my quotes edited like this before.

I was already kindly informed of where Baku was and to get a map. Any authority would be take it seriously if the company is not functioning to the laws of that Country, and besides I would more interested in the threat, and hopefully company pays up, if they feel they are hiding something.

I am not talking about taking a civil Law suit, I dont think it is necessary, but for a foreign company to be allowed to have a Branch office in London, surely there are rules and responsibilities that they must adhere to in the UK. By stating that money owed should be paid to him, or else expect a visit from the Employment Services. In both countries.

Just a phone call and a few e-mails or letters to the company that ripped him off. And perhaps fantasies come true,,,now and again.

When they are convinced there is a possibility that the company is abusing the laws of their country. It is the responsibility of the company to provide a contract, especially when it was asked for |

Have you guys-31 and bels- taken your hysteria pills today or are the techy nature of your replies just due to a combination of tiredness and that revolting gut wrecking efes beer the turks produce to turn people off drinking beer?
I thank you both for your replies and you both 'have reason' as the Spanish say. When I was treated illegally in Spain I was able to go to arbitration and the large franchise paid out a lot of money-roughly half a years pay--but in the old soviet empire this is not an option and the courts in the UK will give the word of each side equal weight, not without proof and it is for you to provide this.
I did not passively accept my situation I did react, but it is not something I felt proud of, I felt I was forced to take actions: which never leave a nice taste in the mouth |

I heard in the papers a while ago that Baltica were planning to release an ultra low-end beer to get a share of the alcoholic market in backwater provincial towns. Priced at a competitive 5 roubles, I think they were hoping to appeal to the more sophiticated samagon drinker.
Baltica -1, maybe. Keep your eyes peeled next time you're in the Magadanskaya oblast |
