Population numbers for Mexican cities can be misleading, I think. Then again, having seen how census takers do their jobs here in Merida, I don't have much faith in census numbers. According to the site that thelmadatter mentioned, Merida has a population of 750,855. However, I'd find any number that wasn't somewhere between a million and a million and a half (or maybe even more) very hard to believe for this city's population. |

Depends on the site. When I was looking at different cities on several sites, most listed Mrida's population as "right around a million". |

Jules,
Yeah, Tec's website leaves something to be desired, especially these days. They've been monkeying around with it the last couple of weeks and its really hard to get around. Before that, I thought it was just fine. I found everything I needed (minus Biblioteca Digital) fairly easily. Im hoping it'll get better. On the main site www.itesm.mx, there is a small link named "campus" just to the "northwest" of the center of the screen. Click that and a page with a map will appear. Click on a dot and it should take you to the webpage for that campus. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me. I work at the Toluca campus and you can pm me or send me an email.
As for population, I agree that the figures probably cant be trusted. I looked at a couple of websites for population and got different numbers. In addition to the reasons you guys cited, add to that whether or not the population takes into account the surrounding towns or not. In the case of Toluca, Metepec might as well be part of it although it is a separate political entity. I suppose you could include it or not. |

if the city size is that important to you and you're interested in the TEC there are half a dozen campuses in cities around a quarter million people or less. the veracruz campus isn't in veracruz, for example. it's not in a city at all, it's in the middle of some sugar cane fields off the highway, close to cordoba (200,000 people and pretty dull). the area is great though. others that spring to mind for small size are irapuato, zacatecas, colima, mazatlan.
depending on the city you might find lots of culture and activities in a small place (guanajuato, xalapa) or lots of nothing in a big place. either way i agree that the cities will feel smaller than a US city of the same size. it usually takes a few million before you see buildings over 10 stories.
also regarding the TEC, it does attract the type of students Moonraven described but at the campus where i taught we also had 40% becados (students on scholarship), mostly middle class and some lower middle class families. it's far from homogeneous. |

At my campus, too, students vary, although I will admit that the majority of our students are better off then the general population. I do have a significant percentage of students, who with becas and sacrifices from their families, just manage to pay the tuition. Usually, these students are a joy to teach as they are serious about their education. Of course, there are those who expect life handed to them on a silver platter. They get a little extra.... a life lesson and a little English.
One shouldn't stereotype anyone, including those of ANY social class or nationality.
Also, this campus has been hurting because we lost a lot of students to some cheaper alternatives that have opened up in the area. Itll be interesting to see what happens in the next couple of years. |

Hi There -
You all rock. I really appreciate all of your suggestions. I found a job lead in Tampico, Tamaulipas. It sounds on paper very much like what I am looking for. Do you guys have any impressions of what kind of a city it is? Does anyone know it? What is it like? |
